After Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election, a new poll shows that Democrats are feeling down about their party's prospects.

The Pew Research Center survey shows that democratic pessimism about the party's future is at its highest point in eight years, while republicans have the most optimistic outlook about their party recorded since the 2016 election, Trump's last presidential victory.

Since 2016, the percentage of Americans who believe the GOP represents their interests better than the Democratic Party has increased from 43% to 50%.

In the 2024 election, Trump won 312 Electoral College Votes, while Vice President Kamala Harris received 226 votes, losing the election. Trump also won all the battleground states. Additionally, Republicans gained control of the Senate and managed to maintain their majority in the House of Representatives, ensuring a 6-3 conservative majority on the Supreme Court.

If Democrats do not have a filibuster-proof supermajority in the Senate, Republicans will not be able to enact their agenda at the federal level. As a result, Democrats are unhappy with their party.

Despite a 20 percentage point increase in pessimism among Democrats since the 2022 midterm election, 51% of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents remain optimistic about the party's future, according to the Pew Research Center. This is about 10 percentage points higher than the number of pessimistic Democrats after Hillary Clinton lost to Trump in 2016.

Individuals under 50 and those who lean further left than conservative and moderate Democrats tend to be more pessimistic.

Republicans are more optimistic about their party today (86%) than after the 2022 midterms (65%) and Trump's 2016 victory (79%).

The largest partisan gap in Republican and Democratic views of their respective party's futures was observed by the Pew Research Center, with a 35 percentage point difference.

Currently, more Americans believe that the Republican Party better represents their interests than the Democratic Party, with about half of Americans saying so compared to 43% who say the same about Democrats. This is a change from previous years when the Democratic Party was perceived as more representative of "people like them."

The swing of opinion regarding the GOP's representation of them well or somewhat well is almost entirely among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, with an 85% increase from a previous Pew Research Center survey in June 2023.

A majority of Democrats, 72%, feel that their party somewhat represents them, while a minority on both sides believe their respective parties do not adequately represent their interests.
