Pennsylvania Governor Shapiro criticizes UnitedHealthcare CEO murder suspect: 'Coward, not a hero'
Gov Josh Shapiro condemned those who have praised the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro strongly criticized the suspect who murdered UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in a brutal manner.
In a Monday press conference, Shapiro criticized the suspect, 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione, who was caught at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Shapiro stated that the suspect is not a hero, but rather a coward.
The governor condemned "vigilante justice" and criticized those who have praised the killing of Thompson on certain websites.
Shapiro stated that in America, we do not resolve policy differences or express viewpoints by killing people in cold blood.
Hours after the six-day manhunt for Thompson's killer ended at a McDonald's in Altoona, his remarks were made.
A 26-year-old software developer, Mangione, was arrested by rookie Altoona Police Officer Tyler Frye after being recognized by an employee and a customer at McDonald's from wanted posters.
As Mangione, who was wearing a mask and a beanie and working on a laptop in the back of the restaurant, was approached by officers and asked to remove his face covering, they recognized him as the suspect wanted for questioning in Thompson's murder.
He allegedly presented a false ID, provided a false name, and "became tense and began to tremble" when questioned about his recent trip to New York.
He was reportedly in possession of writings critical of the healthcare industry and a ghost gun resembling the one believed to have been used to kill Thompson.
Mangione was initially arrested by Altoona police for charges unrelated to Thompson's murder, including possession of an unlicensed firearm, providing false identification to police, and forgery.
According to online court records, he has been charged with murder in New York since then.
