Pam Bondi, Trump's attorney general nominee, will appear before the Judiciary Committee for testimony.
After former Rep Matt Gaetz withdrew his name, Trump selected Bondi.
On Wednesday morning, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a confirmation hearing for President-elect Donald Trump's nominee to be attorney general in his new administration.
In late November, Trump appointed former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to head the Department of Justice (DOJ) after Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, withdrew from the running.
The committee hearing on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. will feature Bondi being questioned by members of both parties.
"Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, hopes that the Democrats will treat [her] with the same courteous consideration that Republicans showed to Attorney General Merrick Garland during the hearing," according to Planet Chronicle Digital.
He added, "I hope people adhere to their schedule so we can proceed promptly."
The committee comprises Grassley and Republican Senators such as Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, John Cornyn of Texas, Mike Lee of Utah, Ted Cruz of Texas, Josh Hawley of Missouri, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, John Kennedy of Louisiana, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Eric Schmitt of Missouri, Katie Britt of Alabama, and Mike Crapo of Idaho.
The committee includes ranking member Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and other Democrat senators such as Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Chris Coons of Delaware, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Alex Padilla of California, Peter Welch of Vermont, and Adam Schiff of California.
Durbin met with Bondi last week but emerged from their discussion with lingering concerns about her record, which includes serving as a personal attorney to President-elect Trump, leading the effort to overturn the 2020 election, and echoing the President-elect's calls for prosecuting political opponents. Additionally, Bondi has a history of opposing fundamental civil rights, including reproductive rights, voting rights, and LGBTQ+ rights.
The Attorney General's job is to ensure an autonomous Justice Department that follows the rule of law and is not swayed by political bias. However, after hearing Ms. Bondi's responses to my questions, I am still worried about her ability to fulfill her role as Attorney General while prioritizing her loyalty to Donald Trump over her constitutional oath.
It is likely that the ranking member will inquire about Bondi during the hearing regarding these topics.
On Monday, Durbin outlined several concerns he has with Trump's pick.
The concern with Ms. Bondi is whether she will maintain the tradition of an independent Department of Justice that upholds the rule of law, as she is one of four personal lawyers to President-elect Trump who has already been appointed to Department of Justice positions. Ms. Bondi was a leader in the effort to overturn the 2020 election and has echoed the President-elect's calls for prosecuting his political opponents. She has a history of unwavering loyalty to the President-elect.
In early December, the attorney general hopeful met with Grassley and stated that Pam Bondi is a well-qualified nominee with an impressive legal career, including eight years as Attorney General of the State of Florida and nearly two decades spent as a prosecutor. Bondi is prepared to refocus the Justice Department (DOJ)’s attention where it ought to be: on enforcing the law and protecting Americans’ safety.
The Judiciary chair assured the committee that they would promptly examine her nomination during the 119th Congress's January session.
Trump commended Bondi in his November statement, stating, "The partisan Department of Justice has been used against me and other Republicans for too long. This ends now."
""As Attorney General, Pam will refocus the DOJ on its mission to combat crime and keep America safe, just like she has been an AMERICA FIRST Fighter for many years," he said."
Bondi has received influential endorsements from several former attorneys general and Justice Department officials since being picked by Trump.
