Over 200 former Bush, McCain, Romney staffers endorse Harris: "The only viable choice is Harris"
An open letter urges 'moderate Republicans and conservative independents' to support Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming election.
Over 200 former Republican officials who previously worked for President George W. Bush, Senator John McCain, or Senator Mitt Romney have endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president in an open letter.
A group of Republican officials, including aides to former President George H.W. Bush, previously tried to persuade voters to oppose former President Donald Trump in the 2020 election. In their letter, the GOP officials emphasized the importance of moderate Republicans and conservative independents voting for Vice President Kamala Harris.
In a letter published Monday by USA Today, four years ago, President George W. Bush, Sen. John McCain, and Mitt Romney alumni warned fellow Republicans that re-electing President Trump would be disastrous for our nation. They stated the plain truth, predicting that another four years of a Trump presidency would irreparably damage our beloved democracy.
"We come together today with new George H.W. Bush alumni to reinforce our 2020 statements and declare for the first time that we are voting for Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz in November. Of course, we have our differences with Vice President Harris and Gov. Walz, but the alternative is simply unacceptable."
GOP officials have endorsed Trump's 2022 presidential bid, following the endorsement of a dozen Republican White House lawyers who served under former President Ronald Reagan and both Bush administrations. Like the Monday endorsement, Republican officials contend that a return to a Trump administration would jeopardize democracy and erode the rule of law in the country.
The Monday letter contained approximately 240 signatures and portrayed Trump's leadership as "chaotic." Furthermore, the letter suggested that the former president supports the goals of Project 2025, a Republican blueprint for a potential GOP administration. Nevertheless, Trump has consistently denied any affiliation with the presidential transition plan, even during his recent trip to the southern border.
"Trump stated that they have been informed officially, legally, and in every way that they have no involvement in Project 25, according to NPR. Despite this, they continue to bring up the topic and falsely accuse him of involvement in every single thing they can think of."
The Monday endorsement letter accuses Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, of "kowtowing" to dictators such as Russian President Vladimir Putin while "turning their backs" on U.S. allies.
"We can’t let that happen," the officials wrote.
"Based on exit polling and voter data, we now know that moderate Republicans and conservative independents in crucial swing states were the ones who gave Joe Biden the presidency," the open letter stated. "We urge our friends, colleagues, neighbors, and family members to take a courageous stand once again and vote for leaders who prioritize consensus over chaos, unity over division, and pride for our country and our children."
Trump Campaign Communications Director Steven Cheung responded to the letter by saying, "It's amusing because no one recognizes these individuals. They'd rather see the nation destroyed than for President Trump to triumphantly return to the White House and restore America's greatness."
