On Election Day, Dearborn flipped from the Harris movement to Trump due to the abandonment of the Harris campaign.
In 2020, Biden received nearly 40 percentage points of support from Dearborn voters.
The movement in Dearborn, Michigan to abandon President Biden and Vice President Harris ultimately backed President-elect Trump on Election Day.
Dearborn voters were observing that President Trump was giving some consideration to the Arab and Muslim community, while Vice President Harris was essentially dismissing their community, according to Mike Hachem, a Dearborn-based leader of the Abandon Biden movement, in an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital on Thursday.
The victory of Trump in the 2024 election was largely due to the support of the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, a city with a high Muslim population, which sent a surprising message by backing Trump's bid for a second term.
In Michigan, Muslim Americans traditionally voted for Democrats, but their dissatisfaction with the Biden administration's handling of the Gaza conflict led them to start a movement to "Abandon Biden," resulting in over 100,000 uncommitted voters during the Democratic primary earlier this year.
The criticism of the administration's handling of the war continued to affect Harris when she became the Democratic vice president, with activists in Dearborn arguing that she had not done enough to regain the votes of the city's Muslim community.
Although many in the community are dissatisfied with Democrats, some expressed skepticism about supporting Trump, citing his first term's strong support for Israel and travel restrictions from Muslim-majority countries.
Hachem, who later helped establish the Arab Americans for a Better America PAC, aimed to alter the narrative by collaborating with community members and raising funds for outreach and advertising in favor of Trump in the Dearborn region.
In southeast Michigan, Muslim leaders appeared to be endorsing Trump, with multiple mayors and religious leaders supporting him.
Trump won 42.5% of the vote in Dearborn, while Harris and Green Party candidate Jill Stein won 36.2% and 18.37%, respectively.
In the 2020 election, Dearborn voted for Biden with 68.97% support, while Trump received 29.72% of the vote. This year, Trump won nearby Dearborn Heights, where 44% of voters supported him and 38% supported Harris, despite both cities having large Muslim populations.
"President Trump is recognizing the Arab and Muslim population as an integral part of the nation and acknowledging their contributions."
