On Day 1, New Senator Bernie Moreno aims to have a border bill on Trump's desk, putting Dems in the spotlight.
Moreno expressed confidence to Planet Chronicle Digital that it would be accomplished quickly.
Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, wants to pass legislation addressing the southern border crisis and believes it will receive enough support in the Senate.
He emphasized the importance of following through on campaign promises, specifically regarding border security, in an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital.
The Ohio Republican, who defeated incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown, stated that the concerns of voters regarding "open borders and high prices" must be addressed promptly.
Moreno stated that they will ensure there is no illegal immigration by sealing and securing the border, and by deporting anyone who is in the country unlawfully.
The proposed legislation would allocate funds for deportations, securing the border, completing the wall, implementing technology, and ensuring the necessary resources for large-scale deportation efforts, as stated.
"The senator confidently stated that they could quickly accomplish the task and even present a bill to President Trump upon his inauguration."
To pass a measure in the Senate without going through the budget reconciliation process, it must receive at least 60 votes in a procedural step, which would require Democratic votes to override the legislative filibuster. With a 53-vote majority in the 119th Congress, the Republicans will not have enough votes to beat the filibuster on their own.
"Moreno stated, "There should be 100 votes for that because it's not a Republican issue. It's an American issue. I want the Democrats to publicly oppose securing our border because it's insane.""
John Thune, the Senate Majority Leader, could introduce border measures for a vote and make Democratic senators take a stand on key GOP-sponsored bills, similar to how Chuck Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader, scheduled votes on contentious issues like abortion, contraception, and IVF.
A reconciliation bill this year will include a portion of legislation on illegal immigration, along with tax cuts, energy, and defense.
"Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday that Congress is working on a powerful bill to revive the country and make it better than ever before. He emphasized the need to secure the border, unleash American energy, and renew the Trump tax cuts, which were the largest in history. However, he also added that he will make it even better by eliminating taxes on tips and using tariffs to bring in more revenue from countries that have taken advantage of the US for years."
"To achieve historic victories for the American people, Republicans must unite and act swiftly. Be smart, tough, and send the bill to my desk for signing immediately. Make America great again!"
