NYC mayor sends sharp warning to liberal opponents about meeting with Trump's incoming border chief.
Eric Adams has attempted to weaken the city's sanctuary city laws.
On Tuesday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that he is willing to meet with incoming Trump border czar Tom Homan to discuss ways to address illegal immigrant criminals and disregarded criticism from the left, urging them to "cancel me."
During a press conference, Adams was questioned about whether he would meet with Homan, who was appointed by President-elect Trump to lead the mass deportation operation he plans to implement after being inaugurated.
Adams highlighted the city's welcoming attitude towards immigrants and underscored the efforts being made to assist migrants in obtaining Temporary Protected Status and work authorization, as well as the provision of services such as case management for migrants. He added that there has been a 21-week decline in migrant arrivals.
"We cannot ignore the fact that the American people have communicated to us, loudly and clearly, that our immigration system is broken. They want to fix it, and we need to address this issue," he said.
"I won't be at odds with this administration. President Trump is the president-elect, and whoever he selects to lead his agencies. I'm eager to meet and discuss how we can improve New York together," he stated.
"I would like to speak with our border czar to discuss his plans and identify common ground for collaboration. I strongly believe that sitting down with those across the aisle, despite different ways of thinking, can lead to productive discussions and the sharing of ideas. I am confident that I have some ideas that can address the issue of securing our borders, addressing violent acts in our country, and ensuring the safety of our citizens."
In a different part of the press conference, he stated that law-abiding individuals who are in the country illegally should not be apprehended suddenly during the night.
But he said that it was different for criminal illegal immigrants.
"The individuals I am referring to are those who are causing harm to our citizens. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to speak with the border czar and discuss strategies for addressing this issue."
Adams countered criticism from the left on the issue by referencing past statements by Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, who he argued had advocated for the removal of criminal undocumented immigrants and dismissed the concept of "cancel culture."
"I will protect the people of this city, and if you come into this country, in this city, and think you're going to harm innocent New Yorkers and innocent migrants and asylum seekers, this is not the mayor you want to be in a city under," he declared.
The migrant crisis has cost New York City billions, and Adams has been urging the federal government for additional support. On Tuesday, he announced that the city has spent $6.4 billion so far.
New York City is a sanctuary city, but Adams has been less supportive of this policy.
He has advocated for modifications that enable individuals suspected of serious offenses to be handed over to ICE, which is currently prohibited under sanctuary laws.
Homan, meanwhile, has also been open to a meeting with Adams.
Homan stated on "America's Newsroom" that he is open to meeting with anyone to enhance community safety, including the individual in question, as he was contacted by the Adams administration on Monday.
"Let's work together to prioritize public safety threats from the beginning. It will keep your community and my officers safe."
