NYC Mayor Adams and Trump Border Czar meet to discuss illegal migrant criminals: "We share the same goal."
New York City will not serve as a sanctuary for individuals who repeatedly commit violent crimes against migrants, immigrants, and long-standing residents, according to Mayor Adams.
Eric Adams, the New York City Mayor, and Tom Homan, the incoming border czar, share the same goal of targeting illegal immigrant criminals after their meeting on Thursday.
On Jan. 20, when the Trump administration assumes office, Adams and Homan will meet to discuss cooperation on deporting violent criminals.
"Adams stated after the meeting that New York will not be a sanctuary for those who repeatedly commit violent crimes against innocent migrants, immigrants, and long-standing New Yorkers. The incoming head of ICE shares the same desire to target those committing violent acts, and Adams was pleased to hear this."
The mayor stated that the city will not tolerate American citizens committing crimes and will not provide a safe haven for undocumented individuals.
Once President-elect Trump takes office on Jan. 20, Homan plans to implement his mass deportation plan.
Earlier this week, Adams announced the closing of dozens of migrant shelters, as the "sanctuary" city continues to see a drop in arrivals.
Since 2022, more than 225,000 migrants have arrived in New York, with the surge coinciding with a spike at the southern border and a strategy by Texas to bus migrants to sanctuary cities. As a result, 25 shelters are being closed in the next few months.
Before the meeting between Adams and Homan on Thursday, immigration activists accused the mayor of working with the new administration.
Mayor Adams is disregarding his duties to maintain New York City's sanctuary city status by working with Trump's border czar Tom Homan, according to Murad Awawdeh, president and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition.
Adams has been highly critical of the federal government's approach to the migrant crisis and has adopted a more stringent stance on illegal immigration than many of his Democratic peers, who have pledged to challenge the Trump administration's plan to expel undocumented migrants.
According to Adams, 170 crimes enable New York officials to interact with ICE following a migrant's conviction.
To guarantee the safety of New Yorkers, I must analyze the situation and determine my authority, as per executive orders. My sole objective is to achieve this goal, and I will not hesitate to do so. Despite any criticism or negative consequences, I will continue to advocate for immigrants and help them achieve the American dream. In doing so, I will save lives in this city.
Those who were accused by the mayor of trying to portray him as changing his stance on illegal immigration were criticized by him.
"The incoming border czar and I share the belief that everyone in this city should be protected from violent crimes. We're committed to pursuing this belief."
