North Carolina to override Dem veto on ICE cooperation while Trump calls for agency reform.

By one vote, the Republicans will lose their supermajority in the state House in 2025.

Democrats have narrowly ended the GOP's veto-proofing supermajority for next session, while GOP North Carolina legislators are set to override outgoing Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper's ban on legislation mandating local law enforcement agencies work with ICE.

The news is that Thomas Homan, President-elect Trump's pick for "border czar," has indicated support for mass deportation and strict enforcement measures.

For five years, legislation requiring state-federal cooperation has been stalled, and the GOP's ability to consistently override the executive branch may soon be hindered.

Despite losing one seat, Raleigh Republicans maintained their three-fifths grip in the Senate. Meanwhile, the governorship will remain in Democratic hands with current Attorney General Joshua Stein succeeding Cooper.

The state House's top Republican, who is expected to succeed U.S. Rep-elect Timothy Moore as speaker, announced that the veto override will be considered on Tuesday.

Rep. Destin Hall, R-Lenoir, stated that some criticism of the bill was "factually incorrect," clarifying that it only applies to individuals who have committed "serious felonies" or "violent misdemeanors" and will not prompt law enforcement to actively seek out illegal immigrants.

The bill contains both the ICE provision and extra funding for school vouchers, but in his September veto statement, Cooper solely mentioned the school choice provision.

In the 2022 session, Cooper criticized the policy as being solely for scoring political points and dividing North Carolinians after he vetoed duplicate legislation.

As the former top law enforcement officer in the state, I am aware that the current law permits the state to imprison and prosecute dangerous criminals, regardless of their immigration status. However, I consider the proposed bill to be unconstitutional and a misuse of local resources, as stated by Cooper.

North Carolina was effectively declared a sanctuary state by Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C.

Senate leader Phil Berger, R-Reidsville, was contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital for additional comment on the plan, but a call to Cooper's office went unanswered.

The ACLU's North Carolina branch criticized the bill, arguing that it bypasses the authority of sheriffs by mandating them to collaborate with ICE and aid in the federal government's deportation process.

"Our communities will not be safer with HB10," the group declared in a statement.

According to The Raleigh News-Observer, Berger previously stated that other work in the upcoming legislative session beyond the override has not been determined.

In the Tar Heel State, some law enforcement officials rejected Trump's attempts, and Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden terminated the "287(g)" agreement with ICE, as reported by The Charlotte Observer.

The bill was opposed by sheriffs in Wilson, Asheville, Durham, and Hillsborough when it was initially introduced.

The consortium of lawmen expressed concern that fulfilling their local duties would be jeopardized and a dangerous precedent set if they overstepped local authority, as stated by a WNCN statement.

If New York City does not provide help, Homan will increase the number of federal agents in the city, as he stated on Planet Chronicle Monday.

He stated that we would complete the task either with or without his involvement.

Republicans will retain their supermajority for the brief, four-day session next week.

In 2025, one Democrat would need to vote against Stein to override any veto.
