Trump press secretary confirms no decisions have been made on this issue.
As President-Elect Donald Trump prepares to take office in January, his administration is reportedly planning to make changes to certain policies that will impact transgender individuals in various areas.
Karoline Leavitt, Trump's campaign spokesperson and future White House press secretary, stated on Wednesday that no decisions have been made regarding the discharge of transgender military personnel, despite international reports suggesting that Trump would do so.
No policy should be considered official unless it is directly from President Trump or his authorized spokespeople, according to Leavitt, who stated that unnamed sources are merely speculating and have no knowledge of what they are discussing.
Approximately 15,000 transgender military personnel are stationed worldwide, including in combat zones, according to SPARTA Pride, a nonprofit organization advocating for transgender military personnel.
In July 2017, Trump announced on Twitter that the U.S. would no longer permit transgender individuals to serve in any capacity, reversing the Obama administration's policy that allowed them to serve openly in the military and receive taxpayer-funded gender-affirming treatments while serving.
Trump cited "tremendous medical costs and disruption" after announcing the rollback of the policy. In 2018, a revised policy was implemented that only prohibited individuals diagnosed with gender dysphoria from serving, unless they had not undergone a sex change and were "stable in their biological sex."
In January 2019, the Supreme Court upheld the ban, but President Biden later reversed the Trump-era restrictions.
During his presidential campaign, Trump hinted at potential modifications to gender-affirming care for minors.
In a video posted to Truth Social in February 2023, Trump announced his plan to stop the chemical, physical, and emotional mutilation of young people. He stated that he would issue an executive order directing all federal agencies to halt any programs that support or promote sex changes at any age.
Trump stated in the video that he would request Congress to permanently halt the use of federal taxpayer funds for promoting or funding these procedures and pass a law prohibiting child sexual mutilation across all 50 states.
During the final stretch of his campaign, Trump's stance on transgender issues was highlighted in an ad that targeted biological males in women's sports. The ad emphasized men competing in women's sports and Vice President Kamala Harris' history of promoting sex change procedures for inmates in California.
The narrator of Trump's campaign ad stated, "Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you." Experts claim that the TV commercial had a significant impact on swing voters.
