Newsom seeks $25M from state legislature to safeguard California against Trump's policies.
A special session of the California state legislature will be held on Monday, convened by the Democratic governor.
Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, will call for a special emergency session of the state legislature on Monday to present a plan for a legal defense fund of up to $25 million to protect the state's justice department from Trump's actions.
The Golden State serves as a cornerstone of the nation, safeguarding and prioritizing the rights and liberties of all individuals, and officials will collaborate with the incoming administration to ensure President Trump's success in benefiting all Americans.
"When there is overreach, when lives are threatened, and when rights and freedoms are targeted, we will take action," Newsom stated. "This special session is about setting this state up for success, regardless of who is in the White House."
The proposed legislation, which is expected to be introduced by majority Democratic lawmakers in the coming weeks, is anticipated to be signed into law before Inauguration Day on Jan. 20.
In the years 2017 to 2021, the California Department of Justice filed 122 lawsuits against the Trump administration's policies, with a total expenditure of $42 million on litigation. The office of Governor Gavin Newsom stated that in one case, the federal government was ordered to reimburse California nearly $60 million in public safety grants.
In 2018, the Trump administration filed two lawsuits against California, one challenging three sanctuary state laws and the other challenging the state's net neutrality law.
In 2019, Trump filed a lawsuit against California's vehicle emissions standards, seeking to revoke California's authority to establish its own emissions standards. In 2020, the Trump administration sued California over its AB 5 independent contractor law.
The Trump administration may target California, a state that supports illegal immigrants, abortion procedures, and transgender transition treatments for children, due to Trump's plan to deport illegal immigrants.
Republican state Sen. Brian Jones, who serves as the upper chamber's minority leader, stated last month that the special session is merely a political stunt aimed at diverting attention from the Democrats' significant losses in California on Tuesday, including the defeat of Prop 5 and the overwhelming win of Prop 36.
"Gov. Newsom's desire to give his attorney general an unlimited budget for legal battles against the federal government is concerning to Californians, despite their top priority being affordability, according to Jones."
