Nearly 60,000 'criminal' migrants reside in NYC, according to a report.
Over 750,000 undocumented individuals reside in New York City.
Over 58,000 illegal migrants in New York City have been convicted of or are facing criminal charges.
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., stated in an interview with the New York Post that it is astonishing how Democrats have made an effort to accommodate gang members, drug dealers, and other criminals who are residing in the country unlawfully.
According to Malliotakis, who represents parts of Staten Island and Brooklyn, the data obtained by the New York Post from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency showed that 7.7% of the city's illegal migrant population, or 58,626 of the 759,218 illegal immigrants living in New York City, had previously been convicted of a crime or had criminal charges pending.
The report stated that out of the 58,626 criminal migrants, 1,153 were "suspected or known gang members."
Malliotakis stated that in numerous instances, they have given housing, food, and healthcare to individuals, but they must cease using New Yorkers' tax dollars to protect criminals causing chaos on the streets and instead collaborate with ICE to deport them.
The percentage of illegal immigrants in the US with a criminal conviction or pending charges is 8.6%, which is similar to the nationwide numbers, according to data.
According to Kenneth Genalo, head of ICE's New York City office, the city will face a difficult time combating the migrant crisis if policies do not change, as it would take a lifetime to remove the criminals from the city. (Source: New York Post)
The crisis was attributed to sanctuary laws by multiple members of the New York City council, who felt the same frustration.
According to Councilman Robert Holden, a Queens Democrat, the ICE data reveals that sanctuary city laws are putting New Yorkers at risk by protecting criminals rather than upholding the law.
Staten Island Republican Council Minority Leader Joe Borelli expressed shock and disbelief, but not surprise, at the ICE data.
The mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, has recently advocated for relaxing the city's sanctuary policies, according to a report. The report cited the mayor's calls to simplify the process of turning over migrants "suspected" of "serious" crimes to federal authorities. However, the mayor has also argued that he lacks the necessary support from the city council to modify the rules.
The city's struggles are being attributed to the Biden administration's handling of the border crisis by the mayor's office.
"Mayor Adams has stated that while we will continue to respect our city's sanctuary laws, we must also have a serious conversation about the small number of individuals who repeatedly commit violent crimes in our city and the consequences they face, as well as fix the nation's unsuccessful border policies that have led us to this place, according to Kayla Mamelak, a spokesperson for Adams, who spoke to the New York Post."
