More Than 150,000 Veterans and Military Family Members Signed Up to Work at Polling Stations on Election Day
The number of poll workers recruited by Vet the Vote increased from 63,500 in 2022 to 163,000 in 2024.
The Vet the Vote coalition has announced that it has recruited 163,000 veterans and military families to work on Election Day, which is significantly more than the 63,500 who were recruited in the 2022 midterm elections.
A majority of veterans who participated in the 2016 election polled in support of Donald Trump's re-election, according to the Election Assistance Commission (EAC). The EAC also reported that a majority of jurisdictions polled found it "very difficult" or "somewhat difficult" to obtain a sufficient number of poll workers. Vet the Vote, a national non-partisan, nonprofit campaign, aims to recruit veterans and military family members to become the next generation of poll workers.
The coalition comprises 43 advocacy groups and other organizations. It has recently partnered with sponsors such as NASCAR, the NFL, and the NBA.
Gustafson, speaking to Military.com, stated that they are hearing about threats and questioned the integrity of the poll workers who carry out the work. He added that they are comfortable with the idea that situations can be challenging and the first goal is to de-escalate. Most poll workers work long days, with half of them being aged 60 or over in 2016, according to the EAC. Election Day is on Tuesday, November 5th. Vet the Vote did not respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment.
