The number of migrants at the southern border in December has surpassed the monthly record for encounters, according to CBP sources, as U.S. and Mexican officials met this week to discuss the advantages of legalizing those residing in the country unlawfully.

According to sources, December has seen more than 276,000 migrant encounters, surpassing the previous record for the highest month.

In September, officials recorded 269,735 encounters of both illegal immigrants and migrants entering the country via the CBP One app.

Since the start of the new fiscal year on October 1st, there have been more than 760,000 migrant encounters at the southern border, making the first quarter of FY 24 the highest quarter on record. Additionally, there have been 82,000 known getaways since October 1st. In the last 24 hours, there were over 9,400 encounters, with over 8,000 resulting in a release with a Notice to Appear.

The southern border has seen multiple records smashed, and Border Patrol has been consistently overwhelmed by the numbers they are encountering.

The administration and Republicans have different perspectives on the surge in migrants at the border. While the administration sees it as a hemisphere-wide challenge that requires more funding and immigration reform, Republicans blame the surge on the policies of the previous administration, including the ending of Trump-era policies.

The DHS official stated that between May and November 2020, there were 400,000 removals, which is almost the same number as the total removals in the entire fiscal year 2019. The agency has implemented a strategy to expand legal migration pathways, target smugglers, and increase the consequences for illegal entry.

Officials have informed lawmakers that they are daily releasing 5,000 illegal immigrants into the U.S., excluding those being paroled at ports of entry.

The White House is seeking $14 billion in border funding as part of an emergency supplemental funding request, but this has been halted due to Republican demands for more limitations on asylum and the government's use of parole to prevent interior releases.

This week, Antony Blinken and Alejandro Mayorkas, both members of the U.S. delegation, met with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in Mexico City.

The countries reaffirmed their dedication to "orderly, compassionate, and systematic migration" and emphasized their efforts to address the "root causes" of migration, disrupt human trafficking, and encourage private investment while also investing in "bold development initiatives" in the region.

Officials discussed the advantages of granting legal status to illegal immigrants currently residing in the U.S., including those safeguarded by the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) - an executive order signed by President Barack Obama, which safeguarded some illegal immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as minors.

The joint statement stated that the delegations discussed the advantages of regularizing the status of undocumented Hispanic migrants who have been living in the US for several years and DACA beneficiaries, who contribute significantly to the US economy and society. The delegations agreed to meet again in January.

The Republican party immediately criticized the proposed measures, warning that they would only worsen the crisis.

Bidens border crisis: CBP reports record number of migrant encounters this year

"As America faces its worst border crisis, it is unjustifiable to hear the Biden Administration's announcement that Mayorkas and Blinken discussed amnesty for illegal immigrants with the Mexican president. The US must prioritize policies that discourage, not entice, those trying to enter the country unlawfully, and the smugglers who profit from the crisis at the border."

The president's policies have resulted in a humanitarian disaster and national security crisis, and the administration's lack of action to address the issue is further evidence of their lack of intention to solve it. President Biden must stop vacationing and take immediate steps to stop the flow of illegal immigration into our country. Our nation's security and sovereignty depend on it, and the American people demand it.
