Longtime California Dem leader announces switch to GOP, citing frustration with party.
A longtime top California Democrat, Gloria Romero, has switched her political affiliation to become a Trump-supporting Republican.
A former California Democratic legislative leader, who has been a leader for a long time, announced on Wednesday that she no longer recognizes her party, but still considers many of its historical figures, including former President John F. Kennedy, her heroes.
Gloria Romero, a former state Senate majority leader who served for over 10 years in Sacramento, criticized her former party.
Romero stated that she had served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention for both Jesse Jackson and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and mentioned that many Latinos and Latinas are departing the party due to similar reasons.
The former San Gabriel Valley lawmaker announced her departure, saying "Goodbye – adios" and expressing her satisfaction.
I am now another individual who is leaving the Democratic Party, joining the increasing number of people departing from this political party.
Romero announced that she has joined the Republican Party and is ready to contribute to making America great again, stating that she has received a warm reception from her former political opponents.
She argued that Democrats were taking a significant step towards authoritarianism and censorship, as former President Reagan had warned that if fascism emerged in the US, it would be disguised as liberalism.
Romero stated that it is frightening to witness how language has been altered to the point where, as a feminist and a former professor, he would be criticized for asserting that he can differentiate between a woman's biological sex and her gender identity.
"I am pro-choice but will not support a party that advocates for full-term abortion. As a mother, I refuse to identify as a "birthing person.""
"The GOP has embraced tranquility, while the Dems have pursued an unending conflict."
She also criticized the Green movement within the Democratic Party, expressing opposition to appliance regulations.
"I refuse to give up my gas stove as a Latina because it's essential for toasting tortillas," she joked.
In Sacramento, Romero announced her support for the GOP and former President Trump, whom she considers the champion of working people and a proponent of the "big tent" philosophy of the Reagan era.
"I will vote for Donald Trump this fall," she said.
Los Angeles Democratic officials dismissed Romero's official announcement as "old news" when asked about her move.
Mark Gonzalez, the former chairman of the county party, told the Los Angeles Daily News that we knew then about Gloria what California Republicans know best: the grift is real.
Another former party staffer claimed on X, formerly Twitter, that the GOP is "dragging up old news to stay relevant."
The top Republican in the state chamber, Sen. Brian W. Jones, R-San Diego, welcomed Romero to the party, stating in a statement obtained by Planet Chronicle Digital that Romero had unsuccessfully tried to "awaken" her former party to its leftward shift.
Jones stated that her leadership and experience have always been centered on serving the people rather than partisan politics. It takes great courage to leave the party you've led and stand for what is right, she added.
"In California, a broken government has led to sky-high prices, increasing crime, and record homelessness."
In early August, Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil of Jackson switched to the Republican Party.
Alvarado-Gil stated that her former party is "unrecognizable" and "lacks the will to address the issues affecting the state."
