Kansas Secretary of State announces 2026 Republican gubernatorial campaign for the seat currently held by a two-term Democrat.
Scott Schwab has emphasized his Christian beliefs during his campaign launch.
Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab has announced his run for the state's Democrat-held governor's seat in 2026, exclusively with Planet Chronicle Digital on Wednesday.
Kansas' Democrat Gov. Laura Kelly, who has been in office for eight years, will be replaced by Republican candidate Schwab in the next election cycle.
"Kansas needs to return to the values and principles that have always fueled us and given me the strength to lead in Topeka, as Secretary of State," Schwab stated in a press release shared with Planet Chronicle Digital. "I have a proven conservative record and a servant's heart. It's crucial for Kansas to take the right path."
In 2002, Schwab was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives and later served as speaker pro tempore. He was later elected secretary of state in 2018.
"A Christian, a father, and a believer in the American dream, Schwab launched his campaign for Governor of Kansas, stating that to achieve greatness, one must break free from the constraints of big government."
As one of the reasons for launching a bid for governor, Schwab stated his alignment with President-elect Donald Trump on several key issues.
In his first campaign ad, Schwab stated that he plans to prevent China from purchasing farmland, enhance election security, and reduce property taxes if elected.
The candidate emphasized his Christian faith during his campaign launch and also mentioned his desire for the U.S. to revert to its traditional values.
Despite having a Democrat governor, the state's leadership is mostly Republican, with two GOP senators and three of its four congressional seats held by Republicans.
Kelly, who has served two terms as governor, hinted that she might not run for re-election in the 2026 midterms.
In 2024, Kelly told KCUR's Up To Date that it was time for her to move on and let others take her place.
The Kansas race is a top priority for the GOP in 2026, according to Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, who was recently elected chair of the Republican Governors Association.
Kemp, who is term-limited next cycle, assured Planet Chronicle Digital that he would be highly engaged in ensuring his successors are Republican.
"We'll collaborate with the Trump administration and various individuals to ensure that our goals are achieved not only in Georgia but also in other states, including Kansas and Arizona, where we have a strong chance of winning governor's races. As a result, we will be taking an offensive approach."
