Joni Ernst had a 'substantive conversation' with Pete Hegseth, as Trump shows support.
Amidst allegations of drinking and sexual misconduct, Hegseth's nomination for a position remains uncertain.
On Friday, President-elect Trump publicly supported embattled defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth, and Hegseth stated that he had a "substantive conversation" with Sen. Joni Ernst.
This week, Republican senators have been meeting with Hegseth, a former National Guard officer, to rally support amidst allegations of sexual misconduct and excessive drinking. Hegseth has denied any wrongdoing.
Ernst has not committed to voting for Hegseth.
"Trump stated on "Meet the Press" that Pete is doing well now, and people are starting to see his potential. He went to Princeton and Harvard and was a good student at both, but he loves the military. Trump added that they will be working on his nomination along with others."
Trump confirmed he still has confidence in Hegseth.
"Trump stated that the individual is highly intelligent, adding that he has known him through Fox and for a long time. He described the person as a military man, stating that he frequently discusses the military when they speak."
Trump stated that although he lacked guarantees from senators about the confirmation of his nomination, he is confident it will be approved.
Trump stated, "Many senators have contacted me, praising him as fantastic."
Trump responded to Welker's inquiry about the drinking allegations by stating that he had spoken to individuals who knew Trump well, and they confirmed that he did not have a drinking problem.
On Friday, Trump endorsed Hegseth on Truth Social, praising his strong and deep support, his military mindset, and his Princeton/Harvard education. He also highlighted Hegseth's charisma and skill as a potential Secretary of Defense. Trump concluded by calling Hegseth a "WINNER" who will excel in the role.
On Friday, Senator Ernst had a significant discussion with Hegseth on his X account, and he expressed his gratitude for her genuine dedication to defense policy, anticipating their next meeting next week.
Ernst characterized their meeting as "constructive" and stated that they plan to meet again next week.
"We will continue our constructive conversations and meet again next week to discuss our warfighters' vision. At a minimum, we agree that Pete Hegseth deserves a fair hearing," she said.
JD Vance, the Vice President-elect, stated on Friday that Hegseth has the support of the incoming administration and won't face a "sham hearing before the American media."
Vance stated in North Carolina that Pete Hegseth will receive a legitimate hearing before the Senate Armed Forces Committee, not a superficial hearing from the American media. He emphasized that Hegseth is the suitable candidate to lead the Department of Defense, and Trump nominated him for this reason. Vance reaffirmed that they will not forsake this nomination.
"I completely support Pete and believe he will be confirmed. We are fully behind him. I have spoken to Joni Ernst and other colleagues about this nomination and others. All I ask is for the Senate nomination process to work without relying on anonymous sourcing from the American media."
