Johnson's government shutdown fight may be hindered by McCarthy's 'final struggles'.

Amid GOP infighting, House Speaker Mike Johnson faces a similar predicament as his predecessor.

Since his ouster in October 2023, 11 months have passed, and his successor, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is facing the same political challenges regarding government funding that McCarthy faced, but it is uncertain if he will suffer the same fate.

On Wednesday, House Republicans will have a conference call to discuss Johnson's plan for preventing a government shutdown by September 30.

The plan, backed by former President Donald Trump, proposes to maintain the current fiscal year's government funding levels until March, while a GOP bill mandating voter registration proof of citizenship is also being considered, according to multiple sources.

Three House Republicans who spoke with Planet Chronicle Digital refused to pledge their support for a short-term bill, known as a continuing resolution (CR). Meanwhile, others questioned the prudence of spending the few weeks leading up to Election Day on a bill that was almost certain to be rejected by the Democrat-controlled Senate.

The plan has been emphatically supported by most conservatives and Trump allies in the House.

"According to Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, spending hawks and conservatives who do not want to give Democrats or the kind of uniparty the pen in December should kick spending into the new year. This would benefit them as it would give them more time to have a robust fight over whether only citizens should be voting."

The SAVE Act, which was passed by five Democrats and Republicans earlier this year, has been stalled in the Senate and is opposed by the White House.

Roy was also involved in the unsuccessful attempt to pass a conservative CR with the House Republicans' border security bill attached last year, which was criticized by Democratic leaders.

In late September, the CR failed after 21 Republicans, who were mainly against it on principle, voted against it.

On Oct. 1, McCarthy was pressured to present a "clean" funding extension to the House, which ultimately led to his removal from office by eight fellow House Republicans.

Roy stated that he had friends on both sides of the divide last year, but there is a significant difference in that President Trump has publicly called for a fight.

Earlier this week, on Monica Crowley's podcast, Trump urged House Republicans to use a shutdown as leverage to pass the CR with the SAVE Act.

With the November House races predicted to be tight in several crucial districts, these weeks may be the Republicans' final opportunity to push through their conservative agenda before the Democrats potentially regain control of the chamber.

The possibility of a government shutdown just before Election Day could put vulnerable Republicans in a tight spot, even if there are slim chances of it being taken up by the Senate or White House.

A senior House GOP aide told Planet Chronicle Digital that whether the bill passes the House is irrelevant, and those pushing for SAVE to be included are aware of this. Alternatively, they may not be aware, and it is unclear which is worse.

Roy argued that his constituents do not care about government funding politics, stating that they "don't give two flying s---s" about it.

Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., expressed concern about a stolen election and criticized the legacy media for exaggerating the impact of shutdowns.

It is uncertain whether this year's conservative CR will receive enough support from the GOP to pass.

Rep. Matt Rosendale, R-Mont., a House Freedom Caucus member who voted against last year's conservative CR and for McCarthy's removal, is already opposed to the plan.

According to Rosendale, who has always opposed CRs, it is disingenuous and dishonest to attach the SAVE act to the CR because no one in Congress believes that this strategy will lead to the passage of the SAVE Act.

House GOP leaders' pledge for single-subject legislation is violated by the play, as he stated.

He refused to reveal whether he would back Johnson's removal from office.

Rosendale stated that individuals often perform the same actions, expecting diverse outcomes, due to the involvement of different individuals.

Rosendale responded to repeated questioning about Johnson by stating that there are many individuals who are willing to provide comments about other members and leadership. He only knows what he intends to do.

Burchett, another anti-McCarthy rebel, stated that he would incline towards backing the CR but would not fully commit.

Johnson was not in danger of being ousted, as he said, adding that "A lot of other things went on" before "one of the final struggles" about spending in McCarthy's case.

McCarthy declined an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, and Johnson's office refused to provide a comment on the CR on the record.
