Johnson's delay of vote keeps House GOP plan to prevent government shutdown alive.

On Wednesday, Mike Johnson had to postpone a House-wide vote on his plan to prevent a partial government shutdown due to the defection of several GOP members, which put the bill in a critical condition just days after its introduction.

Johnson informed reporters that there would be "no vote today" on the continuing resolution (CR) extension and the voter registration process citizenship requirement.

At least eight Republican lawmakers signaled opposition earlier in the morning, causing house leaders to change their plan to hold the vote late on Wednesday afternoon.

House GOP leaders were accused by conservative opponents on Johnson's right flank, who were generally against CRs, of trying to appease them with a messaging bill that would not ultimately be signed into law.

Some GOP national security hawks opposed the six-month spending extension in the bill and advocated for a shorter spending patch until December, fearing its impact on military and other defense funding.

An agreement on government funding by Sept. 30 is necessary for House and Senate leaders to prevent a partial government shutdown.

According to a source close to the discussions, it is expected that Johnson will hold the vote next week, as the speaker hinted at in his remarks.

We must do everything possible to secure the elections, as demanded by the American people, and we will continue to work on this, with the whip leading the effort and building consensus, over the weekend.

Johnson criticized both sides of the bill's opponents, stating, "I challenge any member of Congress, regardless of party, to justify why U.S. citizens should not be the only ones voting in U.S. elections."

Trump urged House Republicans to pass the six-month CR attached to the SAVE Act last month by leveraging a shutdown weeks before Election Day.

This week, he seemed to shift his stance slightly, pushing GOP legislators to oppose a CR unless a noncitizen voting ban was included.

If Republicans in the House and Senate do not receive absolute assurances on election security, they should not proceed with a continuing resolution on the budget. Democrats are attempting to register voters with illegal aliens. Don't let it happen - close it down! Trump wrote on his Truth Social app.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., a Johnson critic and a top ally of Trump's, stated that the post by Trump was about Speaker Johnson. She emphasized that all of them can vote for a CR plus the SAVE act, but it won't matter if the speaker of the House is not willing to fight for it. According to Greene, Truth Social was aimed at one person, and that's where the pressure is.
