If Trump wins, he promises to dismantle billboards advocating for the rights of illegal immigrants.
In 2019, Congress established the DHS office that displays taxpayer-funded billboards.
Donald Trump, the previous president, has pledged to put an end to the use of public funds to construct billboards in Texas that provide assistance to the loved ones of undocumented immigrants who are being held in federal detention.
Kamala Harris is currently advertising free legal services for illegal alien criminals through billboards near the border. When I win, the billboards will be taken down, and the migrant gangs will return home, according to Trump.
The Department of Homeland Security's Office of the Immigration Detention Ombudsman (OIDO) has placed billboards in Texas with the message "Your brother in immigration custody has rights, we’re here to help."
An independent office, the OIDO, was set up in 2019 to assist immigrants with complaints about potential violations of immigration detention standards and to oversee immigration detention facilities.
The DHS was founded by Congress to investigate immigration detention and ensure that it operates in a safe and humane manner, with a focus on resolving any complaints regarding the treatment of noncitizens in detention.
ICE and Border Patrol are enraged by the ads, as they face ongoing funding pressures due to the crisis at the southern border.
Although they are facing a funding shortage, they are allocating funds towards signs that they perceive as detrimental and which they have characterized as "offensive."
Multiple Texas lawmakers, including those who are not Trump, have expressed outrage to Planet Chronicle about the billboards.
"The use of taxpayer money by DHS to promote 'rights' for individuals in 'immigration custody' through billboards should be concerning, as it may foreshadow the legal arguments that radical progressive democrats will employ to oppose the deportation of millions of people brought to America by the Biden-Harris-Mayorkas administration," said Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas.
"Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, stated that DHS consistently prioritizes an open borders agenda over its mission to protect American families. He pointed out that FEMA has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on migrant housing and OIDO has run ads promoting migration, resulting in a waste of government funds. Gonzales urged Congress to end such programs."
The debate over the billboards arises amid a surge in immigration concerns among voters for the 2024 election, triggered by a border crisis that emerged in 2021.
The Biden administration and Vice President Kamala Harris have advocated for a bipartisan border security bill to fix the "broken" immigration system, which they claim requires more funding.
The administration claims that a presidential order issued in June resulted in a 55% decrease in encounters, but critics argue that this drop occurred after record-breaking encounter rates in previous years.
The Biden administration ended Trump-era border policies such as wall construction and the Remain-in-Mexico policy, and Trump has vowed to launch a mass deportation campaign.
