If Laken Riley were DHS secretary, she would still be alive, according to freshman senator Mayorkas.
On Friday, Noem appeared before the Senate Homeland Security Committee to give testimony.
In his first Senate hearing as President-elect Trump's DHS secretary nominee, Sen. Bernie Moreno, a freshman Republican, criticized the Biden administration's immigration policy. Meanwhile, Sen. Kristi Noem, a Republican from South Dakota, sat before the Senate Homeland Security Committee.
During her confirmation hearing before the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Friday, Moreno questioned Noem about Laken Riley's death and asked if she would be alive today if Moreno had been the secretary of Homeland Security.
Senator, my hope is that the Laken Riley Act would be true, yes, as it aims to prevent crimes like the murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, who was killed last year by an illegal immigrant who was sentenced to life without parole.
Moreno inquired about Noem's stance on Mayorkas' immigration record and whether illegal immigration statistics would increase under her leadership.
"I believe we tend to make things more complicated in D.C.," Moreno said to Noem. "Since there is a current secretary of Homeland Security, let's use this opportunity to conduct a job review and compare him to you. I'll ask you some questions, and you can provide an answer. Secretary Mayorkas allowed approximately 400 people on a terror watch list to enter the country illegally. If you were confirmed as secretary of Homeland Security, how many people on the terror watch list would you allow into the country?"
Noem assured that she would work every day to ensure the number is zero.
Noem stated that the 382 immigrants that Biden has allowed and the ongoing policies are shocking and require immediate change.
Moreno inquired, "If Mayorokas allowed approximately 12,000 murderers to enter the country, how many would you permit?"
Noem stated that her daily objective is to prevent murderers from entering the country.
"How many rapists would you target to let in?" Moreno continued.
Noem stated that she would work to prevent any from entering the country.
Noem responded to Moreno's question about the 600,000 illegal immigrants with criminal convictions who were let in by Mayorkas, stating that any migrants with criminal convictions would be "immediately removed."
Noem informed Moreno that she would put an end to the practice of transporting hundreds of thousands of migrants into the United States via jets during her administration.
Moreno inquired about the number of illegals that would be housed in luxury hotel rooms in Manhattan at a monthly cost of $6,000.
Senator Noem stated that during the election, the American people made it clear that they did not support that and that it would not be included in the new administration.
"I will conclude with a surprising statistic and a challenge to the Democrat Party," Moreno stated after requesting Noem to verify other elements of the Biden administration's immigration policy that she would halt.
"Mayorkas was confirmed by every single Democrat and six Republicans. If we can get to the vote, we should have 100 percent of senators vote for his confirmation. This will be a test of whether the Democrat Party is serious about bipartisan things like securing the country and protecting citizens."
