How Vance's victory in the debate helped improve his image.
One candidate exceeded expectations.
It was civil. It was cordial. It was substantive.
JD Vance won the vice presidential debate with ease, while Tim Walz performed better than expected but still stumbled at times.
Each man was assigned a task: to safeguard his running companion and assault the opposing presidential nominee.
Vance aimed to achieve more than just promoting Donald Trump; he also aimed to improve his own image by showing empathy, appearing reasonable, and being open to different perspectives.
Although the Ohio senator is often depicted as a hard-right ideologue with little concern for women, as seen in the famous comment about childless cat ladies, he surprisingly showed empathy towards the pro-choice side when the topic of abortion was discussed.
I am aware that many Americans do not concur with all the things I have said on this topic. Additionally, I come from a working-class family in a neighborhood where I grew up around many young women who faced unplanned pregnancies and chose to terminate them due to a lack of alternatives. One of them is particularly close to my heart, and I know she's watching tonight. I love you.
"She shared with me that she believed her life would have been destroyed if she hadn't had an abortion due to being in an abusive relationship. As a Republican who values protecting innocent life and vulnerable individuals, I recognize the need to improve our efforts in earning the public's trust on this issue, as many people do not trust us."
Vance's website portrays him as a staunch advocate for the sanctity of life.
Walz presented specific examples of women who suffered harm or death due to strict abortion laws in various states.
The governor of Minnesota hit his talking points, but frequently took a long time to get to his main argument. A query about Kamala Harris' plan to construct 3 million housing units led to a diversion about Walz's purchase of only one home.
Walz frequently used a concise language style, such as when he mentioned the ACA, Springfield, and Vance in creating stories without elaborating on the false tale of Haitian migrants eating pets.
The CBS moderators, Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan, strayed into ABC territory by fact-checking only Vance, despite stating they would avoid doing so. After the senator mentioned illegal immigrants in an Ohio town, Brennan pointed out that Springfield "has a significant number of Haitian migrants who have legal status, temporarily protected." This is a point that Walz should have made but didn't.
Senator Vance, you are against most gun control measures that Democrats believe will reduce gun violence. You are against red flag gun laws and legislation prohibiting certain semi-automatic rifles, including AR-15s.
The governor's worst moment was when he was exposed for lying about being in China during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, as reported in the New York Times and other sources. In response, he first gave a confusing answer before admitting his mistake and calling himself a "knucklehead" at times.
Pressed again, he said he had misspoken.
Vance's worst moment was around January 6th. O'Donnell stated, "You have stated that you would not have certified the last presidential election and would have asked the states to submit alternative electors, which has been deemed unconstitutional and illegal."
The senator responded by stating that Trump had previously stated that the protesters should peacefully protest on January 6th. However, on January 20th, Joe Biden was inaugurated as president, and Trump departed the White House.
Trump lost the election and admitted defeat. On the day of the Capitol riot, 140 police officers were beaten, some with the American flag. Tragically, several officers later died.
Vance was asked by him, "Did he lose the 2020 election?"
Walz labeled Vance's repetition of "focused on the future" as a "damning non-answer."
Vance largely appeared as a compassionate conservative in the style of Bush. He believes that, regardless of the outcome, he will run for president in 2028 and must combat the negative media coverage.
If Harris had chosen Josh Shapiro to participate in the debate, the outcome would have been different, as she is currently tied with Trump in Pennsylvania.
The Harris campaign has prevented Tim Walz from conducting any solo interviews, while JD Vance has consistently participated in interviews, podcasts, and press conferences, which may have contributed to his success in the debate.
