GOP resurrects bill to detain illegal immigrants, named after 12-year-old murder victim: 'Justice for Jocelyn'
Illegal immigration remains a top priority for GOP lawmakers.
Republican legislators are reintroducing a measure to mandate that ICE detention facilities be occupied before undocumented individuals are released from custody, under the name of the Jocelyn Nungaray Act.
The "Justice for Jocelyn Act" is being re-introduced by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Texas.
The bill mandates that every ICE detention bed must be occupied before any illegal immigrants are released into the interior. Even if all beds are filled, the bill requires DHS to implement all additional measures before releasing migrants, such as enrolling them in continuous GPS monitoring through ankle bracelets or similar devices.
Capital murder charges have been filed against two illegal immigrants accused of luring Nungaray under a bridge, tying her up, and killing her before throwing her body into a river.
Officials confirmed that both individuals were in the country unlawfully. The first arrived in March while the second came in May. Both were released on a recognizance order, awaiting their immigration court hearings.
"Cruz stated on Planet Chronicle Digital that he started advocating for justice for 12-year-old Jocelyn last year. The aliens who killed her entered the country illegally through the southern border and should have been held by ICE," according to the source.
"ICE and Border Patrol agents were unable to act due to Democrats' open-border policies, resulting in thousands of detention center beds being left empty and criminals going free. Congress must act quickly to prevent this from happening again, as Jocelyn's mother, Alexis Nungaray, has experienced firsthand. It has been a privilege to stand with Alexis in this fight for justice, and I will not stop until our communities are safe and justice is served."
"Nehls stated that he is proud to join Senator Ted Cruz in reintroducing the Justice for Jocelyn Act, which aims to improve the detention and tracking of illegal aliens released into the United States and prioritize the safety of the American people. Jocelyn Nungaray's death was entirely preventable."
The legislation must be passed by Congress, which includes the House and Senate, and sent to President Trump's desk as soon as possible, he stated.
Several bills in Congress aim to combat illegal immigration, including the Laken Riley Act, which requires the detention of illegal immigrants accused of theft-related crimes. Both the House and Senate have passed the bill.
On Monday, Senator Joni Ernst, a Republican from Iowa, reintroduced "Sarah's Law," which mandates the imprisonment of undocumented individuals accused of murder.
The Trump administration is predicted to initiate a "historic" deportation operation upon taking office next week, with the support of Republicans in the House and Senate.
