GOP candidate in New Hampshire highlights opponent's millionaire status after being accused of favoring the wealthy.
Jake Sullivan, the National Security Advisor, is married to Democrat Maggie Goodlander.
On Thursday evening, a Republican congressional candidate in New Hampshire criticized her Democratic opponent, emphasizing her wealth after the Democrat accused her of supporting the wealthy.
During a debate, Democratic congressional candidate Maggie Goodlander, who is married to National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, stated that she believes we should give a break to the wealthiest and largest corporations and hope for the best, hoping that the benefits will eventually reach hardworking people.
"I have a unique perspective. I am of the view that the middle class should receive a tax reduction, and I am convinced that our country will benefit greatly from ending this detrimental tax policy."
Lily Tang Williams, a Republican, retorted at Goodlander, stating, "You possess a significant net worth of $20 million to $30 million. Given your affluence, how can you claim to understand the struggles of ordinary people? Do you frequent Walmart, go shopping, or purchase food? I interact with those individuals on a regular basis. You portray yourself as a renter in Nashua a few months ago, only to return and run for this open seat with millions of dollars from Washington, D.C., insiders. Despite not having the financial resources to advertise on TV, you feign poverty and complain about high rent."
"You do not understand regular people’s concerns."
The New Hampshire Center for Public Interest Journalism reported that Goodlander, who has an apartment in Nashua, New Hampshire, in the 2nd District, stated during the debate that she would own property in the district if elected.
While both candidates are millionaires, it seems that Goodlander is worth significantly more than Tang Williams.
According to WMUR-TV, citing financial disclosures, Tang Williams is worth between $3.8 million and $8.6 million, while Goodlander is worth between $9.9 million and $39 million, with most of her wealth in a trust fund.
According to the New Hampshire Center for Public Interest Journalism, Tang Williams arrived in the U.S. from China with just $100 in her pocket.
In New Hampshire's 2nd District, which was left vacant by Democratic Rep. Annie Kuster, two women are vying for the open seat.
The latest poll shows Goodlander with an eight-point lead ahead of Tuesday.
Tang Williams, a Chinese immigrant, became a U.S. citizen in 1994 and has previously run as a Libertarian in Colorado.
A well-connected political family in New Hampshire hails from Goodlander, who is a native of the state.
According to the New Hampshire Center for Public Interest Journalism, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu has praised Tang Williams as a "phenomenal success story."
