Gavin Newsom to Discuss State's Progressive Policies with Biden Amid Trump Administration Threats
The governor of California and the president-elect have had a contentious relationship for years, with the state filing over 100 legal actions against the latter.
Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, will visit President Biden in Washington this week to discuss Trump-Proofing the state's progressive policies.
The Democratic governor, Newsom, is traveling to Washington, D.C. for meetings with the Biden-Harris administration and the California congressional delegation, according to a spokesperson from his office.
The Governor will continue to push for important priorities that benefit the health and well-being of all Californians, such as securing disaster funding, approving state healthcare initiatives, and addressing climate and clean air concerns, according to Newsom's spokesperson, without specifying a specific timeline for the meetings.
After Trump's election night victory, Newsom wrote that California was prepared to resist.
"Our fundamental civil rights, reproductive freedom, and climate action are non-negotiable, and we will not allow our values and laws to be undermined," Newsom stated.
After Newsom's statement about working with the incoming president, those comments were made a day later.
The Newsom administration filed over 100 lawsuits against the Trump administration during Trump's first term. Now, the governor is requesting more state funds for the California Department of Justice and other agencies to better defend the state in legal battles.
The special session of state lawmakers, scheduled for Monday, Dec. 2, will concentrate on protecting "civil rights, reproductive freedom, climate action, and immigrant families."
Trump has rejected Newsom's request for a special session, claiming on his Truth Social platform that the governor is attempting to harm the country.
Trump stated that he is using the term "Trump-Proof" to halt the great things that can be accomplished to "Make California Great Again," but he won the election overwhelmingly.
