Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy is accused of making a "dumbest political decision" by Trump.
Before taking office, Trump seeks to raise the debt ceiling.
In 2023, the debt ceiling suspension was approved, and President-elect Donald Trump deemed it one of the dumbest political decisions made in years.
Trump softened his criticism of McCarthy by referring to him as a friend and a good person, while still targeting the former top House GOP lawmaker.
Trump declared in a post that the extension of the Debt Ceiling by a previous Speaker of the House, a good man and a friend of mine, from this past September of the Biden Administration, to June of the Trump Administration, will go down as one of the dumbest political decisions made in years. There was no reason to do it - NOTHING WAS GAINED, and we got nothing for it - A major reason why that Speakership was lost. It was Biden’s problem, not ours. Now it becomes ours.
The speaker stated that he named the issue "1929" because the Democrats are indifferent to the consequences of their actions, even if it leads to a depression. He emphasized that the Democrats should be held accountable for their actions and that the vote should take place during the Biden Administration. He also expressed his belief that the Democrats should be blamed for any potential disaster that may result from their inaction.
Last year, Congress passed a deal that suspended the debt limit until January 1, 2025, but before he takes office, President-elect Trump has been advocating for an increase in the ceiling.
"The Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 was enacted in June 2023, suspending the debt limit until January 1, 2025. On January 2, 2025, the new debt limit will be established at the amount of outstanding debt subject to the statutory limit at the end of the previous day. Treasury currently expects to reach the new limit between January 14 and January 23, at which time it will be necessary for Treasury to start taking extraordinary measures. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen wrote in a recent letter to congressional leaders, urging Congress to act to protect the full faith and credit of the United States."
Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance advocated for an increase in the limit as part of a temporary government spending plan earlier this month.
"The two men stated that the most foolish and inept thing ever done by Congressional Republicans was allowing our country to hit the debt ceiling in 2025. They added that it was a mistake and must be addressed. However, they also pointed out that increasing the debt ceiling is not great, but they would rather do it on Biden's watch. They also mentioned that if Democrats won't cooperate on the debt ceiling now, it is unclear whether they would do it in June during their administration."
But the measure that eventually passed did not raise the ceiling.
Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, criticized the recent debt ceiling extension on X, stating that only 71 House Republicans opposed it 18 months ago, with the Freedom Caucus being the only exception.
"Democrats voted against the recent debt ceiling increase proposal on 12/19 with a margin of 197-2, indicating that their price for supporting it was very high (more spending/taxes)," Roy stated. "Yes, we can and should address the debt ceiling through reconciliation in January with mostly GOP votes, but with real, meaningful spending cuts."
