Florida Senate President Joe Negron will succeed GOP Rep. Bill Posey in Congress.
Posey was elected to Congress for the first time in 2008.
Florida GOP Congressman Bill Posey declared on Friday that he would not seek re-election, following the lead of other Republican lawmakers who have also decided not to run for re-election.
"Katie and I have been honored to represent you in Congress, and polls suggest that your support has allowed me to continue in the job indefinitely. We were excited to run for another term. However, unforeseen circumstances have forced me to suspend my re-election campaign."
Posey stated that he would continue to dedicate all available resources to represent his constituents, support President Trump's return to the White House, and trust in former Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos to carry on his fight against the swamp and succeed him as their Congressman.
On Friday, former Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos announced his campaign and thanked GOP representative Posey in a Facebook post for his endorsement.
Posey stated that Mike has been his Congressional Finance Committee Chairman for many years and that he has been mentoring him to replace him. Posey added that Mike was and remains his first choice to represent their district in Congress.
"Although I won't disclose personal information, the stars aligned for Mike to run for Congress. I wholeheartedly support him and will do everything possible to aid his election," he stated.
Haridopolos thanked Congressman Bill Posey for his service to the community, state, and nation in a statement to Space Coast Daily upon his announcement. He pledged to work every day to uphold Posey's legacy of service and serve the people of District 8 with integrity and honor.
Posey served in the Florida State Legislature for 18 years before being elected to Congress in 2008. He was a supporter of former President Donald Trump.
He recently cast a vote against the foreign aid package backed by Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and the FISA renewal earlier this month.
"Posey stated that our country is facing a crisis with border security and a national debt that is putting an excessive strain on our cities and endangering the safety and security of Americans. He emphasized that defending our borders and balancing our budget should be the top priority in Washington. Posey has voted against 99% of all spending over the past four years because these bills did not secure our border. The American people expect Washington to prioritize America first."
