Florida gubernatorial bid is being considered by Matt Gaetz.
Ron DeSantis is unable to run for governor in 2026.
On Wednesday, Former Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Florida Republican, stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that he is considering the possibility of running for governor.
If the former House lawmaker decides to run for office, he would need to take active steps toward his campaign by the end of 2025.
Gaetz, who recently began hosting a One America News Network program, stated that many Floridians have urged him to run for office. Although he believes it is premature to make a decision, he will consider the possibility and discuss it with his wife.
He stated that he is deeply concerned about rising prices in Florida, including property and casualty insurance. He said he knows how to combat the special interests responsible for the increase and if he believes he can make a positive change, he will seriously consider moving.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who was re-elected in 2022, is ineligible to run for re-election in 2026, leaving the door open for other candidates to contest the governorship.
Florida state Sen. Jason Pizzo, a Democrat, responded to the Tampa Bay Times' report that Gaetz said he was "starting to think about running for governor" by declaring, "And I will kick his ass."
After winning re-election in Florida's 1st Congressional District in 2024, Gaetz resigned from Congress following President-elect Trump's announcement of him as his nominee for U.S. attorney general.
In the same month, Gaetz withdrew himself from the role.
"I am withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General because there is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle. Trump's DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1," he stated in a post on X.
Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis has been endorsed by Trump to fill Gaetz's former House seat, with the GOP primary taking place later this month.
The House Ethics Committee concluded that there is substantial evidence that Representative Gaetz violated House Rules and other standards of conduct, including prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, and obstruction of Congress.
In a post on X, Gaetz stated that there was a reason for the treatment he received in a Christmas Eve-Eve report rather than in a courtroom where he could present evidence and challenge witnesses.
In 2023, McCarthy was removed from the speakership due to Gaetz's actions.
