An FEMA official was let go after instructing relief workers to bypass homes displaying support for President-elect Trump following the hurricanes in Florida.
An FEMA official was let go after instructing relief workers to bypass homes of Trump supporters following the hurricanes.
According to a FEMA spokesperson, they are "deeply disturbed" by the incident and have noted that the official who gave the instruction "was not instructed to direct teams to avoid these homes."
The spokesperson stated that although they believe the incident is unique, they have taken steps to remove the employee from their position and are investigating to ensure it never happens again.
The employee who issued this guidance lacked authority and was not instructed to direct teams away from these homes, and we are contacting those who may have been overlooked due to this incident, the agency stated.
The Daily Wire first obtained internal messages about the incident.
In messages obtained by the outlet, a FEMA official instructed workers to "avoid homes advertising Trump" among other practices.
The system tracking application used by aid workers showed that they did not make contact with the residents, according to the outlet, which attributed this to the directive: "No contact with residents if Trump sign is present."
The agency is taking the incident "extremely seriously" and is investigating it.
Over 365,000 households have received direct assistance from FEMA after Hurricanes Helene and Milton, totaling over $898 million in aid.
"We are horrified that this happened and have taken extreme measures to rectify the situation, ensuring that it was addressed at all levels," the agency stated. "Our top priority is to help people, and our workforce will continue to support survivors for as long as necessary."
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared that his administration is initiating an investigation into FEMA due to its "blatant weaponization."
"The use of weapons by partisan activists in the federal bureaucracy is another reason why the Biden-Harris administration is coming to an end," he stated. "Under my orders, the Division of Emergency Management is conducting an investigation into the federal government's discrimination against Floridians who support Donald Trump."
"I'm optimistic that the new leadership in D.C. will fire these partisan bureaucrats," he said.

The revelation of mismanagement occurred following the Biden administration's warning against spreading "disinformation" about FEMA.
In his White House address on the government's response to Hurricanes Milton and Helene, President Biden condemned the "irresponsible and relentless spread of false information and outright lies."
"During an October address, Biden stated that Mr. Trump and others know it's a lie to claim that $750 is all they'll receive. He found it bizarre and urged them to stop their un-American behavior in discussing the matter."
