Elon Musk is accused by Germany of attempting to influence its national elections.
The far-right party in Germany has faced backlash from more mainstream political parties in Berlin after Musk endorsed them.
On Monday, Elon Musk was accused by German government officials of trying to influence the upcoming parliamentary elections in favor of the far-right political party, based on his recent social media posts and op-ed.
The German Alternative for Germany (AfD) political party has been praised by Musk as the ideal party to bring about a fiscally responsible economy in Germany, with its approach to regulations and taxes being commended. However, Musk has also strongly defended the party against accusations of radicalism and neo-Nazi links.
Top German government officials have expressed their ire over Elon Musk's comments, which they believe were timed to influence the German audience just weeks before the snap parliamentary elections, regardless of the effectiveness of his messaging.
German government spokesperson Christiane Hoffmann stated at a press briefing Monday that Elon Musk is attempting to impact the federal election.
Musk is entitled to share his views, as Hoffmann stated, emphasizing, "Freedom of opinion encompasses even the most absurd beliefs."
In February, the Alternative for Germany political party will hold snap parliamentary elections, and Musk has faced criticism for his perceived endorsement of the party.
This fall, Scholz has been criticized by Musk as a "fool."
Last week on his social media platform X, Musk commended the AfD, stating: "The AfD is the only party that can save Germany."
In an op-ed published in the German center-right newspaper, Welt am Sonntag, Musk reaffirmed his support.
Musk refuted the portrayal of the AfD as right-wing extremist by pointing out that Alice Weidel, the party's leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka. He asked if that sounded like Hitler.
In his opinion, the AfD can bring about a future where economic prosperity, cultural integrity, and technological innovation are not mere aspirations but tangible realities.
The party has faced criticism from U.S. lawmakers, former leaders, and Berlin leaders due to its reputation as a neo-Nazi group.
The German government spokesperson, Hoffman, stated on Monday that Musk's endorsement of the AfD was a recommendation to vote for a party that is being monitored by domestic intelligence for being right-wing extremist and has already been recognized as partly right-wing extremist.
The Social Democratic party (SPD) member and German health minister, Karl Lauterbach, condemned Musk's actions as "unbecoming and extremely problematic."
Earlier this year, Germany's domestic intelligence agency labeled the youth wing of the AfD as a "confirmed extremist" group, and all mainstream German political parties have ruled out working with the AfD.
The AfD, for its part, has rejected that characterization.
Despite opposition from U.S. and German officials, Musk remains determined to argue that Germany's economy is hindered by excessive regulation and bureaucracy, portraying the Alternative for Germany (AfD) as the only hope for the country.
"Germany's traditional parties have been unsuccessful, as their policies have resulted in economic stagnation, social unrest, and a decline in national identity, according to Musk in an op-ed for the SPD and other mainstream parties."
The publication of Musk's op-ed in a center-right newspaper was heavily criticized and led to Eva Marie Kogel's resignation as opinion editor of Welt am Sonntag.
