Elise Stefanik, President Trump's U.N. ambassador nominee, stated that she sees "great promise" in the United Nations and intends to bring "reform" to the organization.

During her confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the nominee will state that President Trump believes the United Nations has great potential if it concentrates on its original objective of promoting international peace and security. The President has consistently supported peace and the avoidance of new conflicts, according to excerpts of her opening statement obtained by Planet Chronicle Digital.

She will commit to backing Israel amid ongoing criticism for the Gaza conflict and strive to ensure the organization utilizes American funds to promote American goals.

"With hostages including Americans still held in Hamas' captivity and national security challenges ranging from China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran, it is more critical than ever for the United States to lead with strength and moral clarity," Stefanik plans to say.

"As a congressional representative, I recognize the importance of being responsible with U.S. taxpayer money. The U.S. is the largest contributor to the U.N., and our tax dollars should not be used to support organizations that are detrimental to American interests, antisemitic, or involved in fraud, corruption, or terrorism."

"To enhance our national security, we must invest in programs that deliver results. To improve the effectiveness of U.N. programs, we must drive reform. As the first U.N. Ambassador to come directly from Congress in over two decades, I understand the importance of oversight and appropriations. I am committed to using my strong relationships with the House and Senate to deliver much-needed reforms."

Before the Foreign Relations Committee votes on her confirmation, Stefanik will be questioned about her plans for representing the U.S. at the U.N. during a hearing on Tuesday.

Stefanik, the current House GOP Conference chair, is predicted to easily secure confirmation for her role in the U.N. Stefanik is a strong supporter of Israel, as is Sen. John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania. She has previously served on the Intelligence and Armed Services Committees, but gained notoriety last year for her work on the other side of the table during Education Committee hearings, where she questioned university presidents and their policies regarding pro-Gaza protests.

If confirmed, Stefanik will regularly meet with the president to share updates and suggestions as the U.N. ambassador, which is a Cabinet-level position.

During his first term, Trump reduced funding for specific U.N. agencies and programs, while both he and Stefanik have been vocal in their criticism of the organization.

The UN, established with the goal of promoting global peace, development, and human rights after World War II, receives about one-third of its budget from the US. President Biden recently increased US financial contributions to the UN and its sister agencies, increasing the budget from $11.6 billion in 2020 to $18.1 billion in 2022.

That year, the U.S. contributed about three times as much as Germany and Japan, with a budget of $6.8 billion and $2.7 billion respectively.

The new administration may have more flexibility to withhold funds to the U.N. if its global interests do not align with those of the U.S., as some Republicans have already suggested.

In 2026, when the international body selects its next secretary-general, Trump will still be in office and the U.S. will retain its veto power over any candidate.

The U.N. particularly relies on the U.S. for global aid programs.

In 2022, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) received half of all contributions to the World Food Programme and about a third of all contributions to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Organization for Migration, and other organizations.

Nearly 15,000 Chinese nationals now work at the U.N., up from 2009 to 2021, according to critics who have warned about China's infiltration of the agency.
