The White House announced that President Biden has ordered the flags to be flown at half-staff until January 28 in honor of the late former President Jimmy Carter.
On Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson declared that the U.S. Capitol flags will be raised to full-staff on Monday, January 20th, to commemorate President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.
Despite President Biden's official order for flags to fly at half-staff for 30 days following the death of former President Jimmy Carter on Dec. 29, the move has been made.
On January 20th, the flags at the Capitol will be raised to full-staff to commemorate the unification of our nation in support of the inauguration of our 47th President, Donald Trump. The flags will then be lowered to half-staff on January 21st to pay tribute to President Jimmy Carter.
Johnson has the support of Trump, and the president-elect's recent endorsement of him helped Johnson overcome opposition from some far-right Republicans in his bid for re-election as speaker in the new Congress.
The U.S. flag code dictates that U.S. flags are flown at half-staff for 30 days to commemorate the death of a current or former president at federal government buildings, military installations, vessels, and U.S. embassies and other facilities worldwide.
Trump asserted on social media earlier this month that "Democrats are all 'ecstatic'" about the flags being flown at half-staff during his inauguration.
"No American can be content with this. Let's observe how it unfolds. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
Trump could potentially disregard the U.S. flag code after being inaugurated as president.
On Monday, a flag at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, was flying at full height, as observed by the Associated Press.
The flag was lowered in mourning after Carter's funeral service and burial, but was later raised in honor of his memory.
On Monday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared that the flags at the state Capitol building in Austin and all state office buildings would be raised to full-staff to commemorate President Trump's inauguration.
