During the 2020 Democratic National Convention, Chicago police received more assistance than they did during the peak of the riots that year, according to a retired police chief.
A retired Illinois police chief claims that the Chicago PD did not have the same resources to safeguard the city during the peak of the 2020 summer riots.
The retired Illinois police chief tells Planet Chronicle Digital that the $75 million policing budget for the just-concluded Democratic National Convention was successful for Chicago, but it highlights the stark difference in funding compared to the height of the 2020 George Floyd riots.
According to retired Riverside, Illinois, police chief Tom Wetizel, the security for the DNC is the largest police presence in the history of Chicago, surpassing all local, state, county, and suburban federal agencies.
During the protests following Floyd's death, Weitzel remembered that the department did not receive the necessary resources from external sources, despite requesting them, and the support was far from what was required.
The Democratic Party, which was once known for advocating to defund the police, now has the largest police presence at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. This seems strange to me.
The Chicago Police Department received most of the $75 million in federal funding allocated by the White House's Office of Budget and Management for security at the DNC, according to a local news outlet ahead of the event.
According to Weitzel, providing those resources to departments on the South Side of Chicago, a heavily crime-prone area, would have a considerable impact on reducing crime.
During the convention, anti-Israel protesters gathered near the DNC to demonstrate against the Democratic ticket's foreign policies and other left-wing causes. Some were affiliated with pro-Hamas groups and burned the American flag, while others waved Palestinian flags and chanted "There is one solution, intifada revolution" and "Long live the intifada."
At least 74 arrests were made during the four-day convention by the Chicago Police Department.
"Last week, Superintendent Larry Snelling informed reporters that our city was showcased to the world, and he guaranteed that it was being watched. He emphasized that this event proved that it was not 1968."
In 1968, during the Chicago Democratic National Convention, about 600 individuals were arrested due to the ongoing social unrest and the anti-Vietnam War protests that characterized the event.
"I can confidently say that Chicago PD is the group of heroes they are because of their training, patience, and professionalism. They are not the main focus of the news for misconduct or overreaction."
