DNC staffers are told by Harris that their spirit will not be defeated after devastating layoffs.
After Election Day, DNC staff members were terminated without receiving severance packages.
On Sunday, Vice President Kamala Harris attempted to uplift Democratic staffers who were facing layoffs from the DNC, assuring them that their "spirit will not be defeated."
During the DNC's holiday celebration in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, Harris made comments alongside President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. The event, which took place at the DNC headquarters, hosted staffers who were let go from the DNC without severance packages after the election.
"This holiday season, let us be mindful of the blessings we possess and celebrate them. We should also strive to create new blessings and remember the importance of our country."
She emphasized the importance of the spirit that drives the countless hours and days and months of work put into the project, stating that it cannot be defeated. She reiterated that their spirit is not defeated and they are not defeated. She urged clarity about their strength and purpose, emphasizing that they are clear about why they are in this. She thanked the audience for their hard work and encouraged them to continue.
After Harris, Biden defended their legacy and claimed that the country is in a "resoundingly" better position today than when they entered the White House.
"I have always believed that public service, particularly the presidency, requires asking oneself if the country is better off than before. Today, I can confidently say that the answer is a resounding yes," he stated.
WHO ELSE IS MULLING A BID TO STEER THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY
He urged staffers to remain committed in the future.
""Kid, you're not going anywhere," Biden stated, emphasizing that they wouldn't allow it."
In late November, the DNC union protested against the post-election layoffs, which are typical in Washington, D.C. Some DNC staffers had expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of severance packages and other benefits during the layoffs.
"A DNC union member told Mother Jones that the DNC management's claim that layoffs are part of the job is cruel and that the organization should treat its workers with basic dignity, regardless of the outcome of the election."
Jaime Harrison, the DNC Chair, will not seek re-election, creating an opportunity for new leaders to compete for the position.
The next chair will be selected by the approximately 450 members of the national party committee during their winter meeting at National Harbor in Maryland, which takes place at the beginning of February.
The candidates vying to succeed Harrison are Martin O'Malley, the ex-governor of Maryland, Ben Wikler, the Wisconsin Democratic Party leader for five years, and Ken Martin, the Minnesota Democrats chair.
