On Thursday, immigration activists in New York City criticized Mayor Eric Adam for meeting with incoming Trump border czar Tom Homan, alleging that he was working with the new administration.

Mayor Adams is disregarding his duties to maintain New York City's sanctuary city status by working with Trump's border czar Tom Homan, according to Murad Awawdeh, President and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition.

Despite the sanctuary city status of New York City, Trump's border czar will meet with Mayor Adams on Thursday afternoon to discuss cooperation on deporting violent criminals.

"I won't be fighting with this administration, I'll be collaborating with them," Adams stated last week. "President-elect Trump has the right to appoint whoever he wants to lead his agencies. I'm excited to meet with them and discuss how we can improve New York."

""I would like to speak with our border czar to discuss his plans and identify common ground for collaboration. I strongly believe that by sitting down with those across the aisle and sharing our ideas, we can find solutions to the issues at hand. I have some ideas that could address the concerns of the American people, such as securing our borders, addressing violent acts, and ensuring the safety of our citizens," he stated."

He emphasized that law-abiding immigrants should not be rounded up in the middle of the night.

Adams conveyed a message to critics on the left, urging them to "cancel me."

"I will protect the people of this city, and if you come into this country, in this city, and think you're going to harm innocent New Yorkers and innocent migrants and asylum seekers, this is not the mayor you want to be in a city under," he declared.

But that has not stopped the criticism from activist groups over the meeting.

"New Yorkers are aware that ICE's actions under Homan will result in the division and demonization of immigrants, making the city even more unsafe, as stated by Awawdeh. The memory of the gunfire and street brawl that occurred in a Brooklyn neighborhood in 2020, resulting in an immigrant New Yorker being shot in the face, is too fresh for many."

"ICE's immigration agenda is cruel and politicized, diverting resources away from initiatives that promote safety and well-being. Mayor Adams must prioritize public safety by refusing to participate in ICE's targeting of immigrants for arrests and deportation."

"Research consistently demonstrates that cities with significant immigrant populations are safer than those with smaller immigrant populations, and cities with sanctuary policies have lower crime rates. Adams' prioritization of his own political interests over the safety and well-being of all New Yorkers is evident," Awawdeh stated.

Last week, Homan stated that he was willing to meet with Adams.

Tom Homan issues warning ahead of Trump immigration crackdown: Dont test us

Homan stated on "America's Newsroom" that he is open to meeting with anyone to enhance community safety, including the individual in question, following contact from the Adams administration.

"Let's prioritize public safety threats from the start. By doing so, we can make your community safer and keep our officers safe. Together, we can ensure that the community remains safe. Let's work together to achieve this goal."

Unlike many of his Democratic colleagues, Adams has adopted a stricter stance on illegal immigration, advocating for the repeal of sanctuary policies to facilitate the removal of criminals. Other Democrats have pledged to either oppose or refrain from aiding in deportation efforts.
