Despite the ongoing migrant crisis and the push for addressing the "root causes," Harris has not yet spoken to the Border Patrol chief.
President Biden's decision to drop out of the presidential race will intensify the scrutiny of Vice President Harris.
Despite the ongoing crisis at the southern border and her role in addressing the "root causes" of the crisis, Vice President Kamala Harris has not yet spoken to the current head of Border Patrol.
According to sources close to Planet Chronicle, Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens, who took over the position last year during a border crisis that has persisted for three years, has not spoken to Vice President Kamala Harris.
During his tenure as head of Border Patrol, Raul Ortiz stated that he had not received any communication from Biden or Harris.
"I have never had a conversation with the president or vice president, and I was the chief of the Border Patrol, commanding 21,000 people. That's a problem," Ortiz stated on "60 Minutes." NewsNation first reported that Harris had not spoken to either chief. Customs and Border Protection and the White House did not respond to requests for comment.
In 2021, President Biden assigned Harris the responsibility of heading the diplomatic efforts to address the "root causes" of migration in the Northern Triangle countries. This earned her the nickname "border czar" from Republicans, although the White House rejected this label.
The politically challenging assignment for Harris was to complete it during a surge in encounters that resulted in record-breaking years in three consecutive fiscal years.
In 2021, Harris planned to visit Mexico and Guatemala as part of her beat, where she would advise migrants not to come and also visit the border in El Paso, Texas. Additionally, a project aimed at encouraging private-sector investment in the region through a call to action has seen more than $5.2 billion committed since May 2021 from over 50 companies and organizations.
Despite a decline in the number of encounters from Northern Triangle countries, they remain the top countries of origin for migrants arriving at the border, with over 330,000 encounters so far in FY 22.
In the upcoming months, Harris' immigration record will likely be closely examined due to Biden's decision to support her as his successor after dropping out of the presidential race.
The crisis has been a top priority for voters, according to polls. Republicans have criticized the administration for rolling back Trump-era policies, which they claim led to the crisis.
The Biden administration has introduced a comprehensive immigration reform bill, but it was rejected by Republicans because it included a pathway to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants.
The Senate package introduced earlier this year has been supported by Harris.
She stated that the agreement on border security and immigration does not cover all that they have fought for in the past three years, but it demonstrates their ability to secure the border while maintaining legal immigration, in line with their national values.
