Despite Carter's one-month order, Abbott orders flags at full-staff for Trump's inauguration.
The White House announced that President Biden has ordered the flags to be flown at half-staff until January 28 in honor of the late former President Jimmy Carter.
On Monday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared that the flags at the state Capitol building in Austin and all state office buildings will be raised to full-staff on January 20th to commemorate President-elect Trump's inauguration.
Despite President Biden's official order for flags to fly at half-staff for 30 days following the death of former President Jimmy Carter on Dec. 29, the move has been made.
Abbott declared that on January 20, the United States will commemorate its democratic custom of transferring power to a new President by inaugurating the 47th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump. In preparation for this occasion, I have directed all flags to be hoisted at full-staff at the Texas Capitol and all state buildings.
The conservative three-term Texas governor added that while we pay tribute to a past president, we must also recognize the contributions of a new president and the promising future for the United States of America.
On January 21, the Abbott adviser informed Planet Chronicle that the flags at the Texas Capitol and state offices would be lowered to half-staff.
""We remember the passing of former President Jimmy Carter with our fellow Americans across the country, and we honor his legacy by displaying flags at half-staff for 30 days," Abbott stated."
The U.S. flag code dictates that U.S. flags are flown at half-staff for 30 days to commemorate the death of a current or former president, at federal government buildings, military installations, and vessels, as well as at U.S. embassies and other facilities worldwide.
During mourning periods, state flags are lowered in accordance with U.S. flag code, which states that no flag should fly higher than the American flag on the same or nearby poles.
Trump asserted on social media earlier this month that "Democrats are all 'ecstatic'" about the flags being flown at half-staff during his inauguration.
"No American can be content with this. Let's observe how it unfolds. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
As president, Trump has the power to disregard the U.S. flag code.
