Democrats gain House seats through redistricting, while Republicans benefit.
In North Carolina, Republicans experience significant advancements while in New York, Democrats manage to displace incumbents.
Republicans were optimistic about their chances to win big in North Carolina.
"The Republican Party will gain a significant advantage with the flip of this congressional seat from the Democrats to the Republicans, as stated by congressional candidate Brad Knott, R-N.C., during a rally with vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance of Ohio just days before the election," said Brad Knott, R-N.C.
Knott accurately predicted the outcome, but Republicans flipped a total of three seats, not just his.
"I am going to be the next congressman from the 6th District of North Carolina thanks to your support," said candidate Addison McDowell, R-N.C., at a Nov. 2 Trump campaign event in Greensboro.
The success of the Republicans was largely due to the redrawn congressional maps that were supported by a state lawmaker who was also elected as a congressman.
"I am Tim Moore, the current speaker of the House, and soon to be a member of the United States Congress representing Gaston County," stated North Carolina speaker of the House and congressional candidate Tim Moore, R-N.C., at a Nov. 2 Trump campaign rally in Gastonia, N.C.
After receiving an additional seat on its congressional map due to population growth following the 2020 census, Rep.-elect Moore will now represent that seat.
In July, Moore stated that the state House and Senate have a Republican supermajority, and they are skilled at accomplishing tasks in the state.
North Carolina's congressional map was redrawn three times before the 2022 midterm elections. Despite the initial split of seven Republicans and seven Democrats, state Republicans were not content and redrew the map once more before 2024. Moore, at the time, stated that "7-7 does not reflect the will of the voters in North Carolina."
Ultimately, it shouldn't be the judges or bureaucrats who decide, but rather the people through their elected representatives in the legislature, as Moore stated following Supreme Court debates on the maps in 2022.
In December 2023, District 6's Kathy Manning, D-N.C., announced she wouldn't seek re-election despite the finalization of a map that was expected to benefit Republicans.
Wiley Nickel, a Democrat from District 13 in North Carolina, has decided not to run for re-election in 2022 and is instead considering a Senate run in 2026 against incumbent Republican Thom Tillis.
Rep. Jeff Jackson, D-N.C., criticized the maps and successfully ran for North Carolina attorney general.
It is crucial for people to understand the significance of every race on the ballot, according to Jackson during his campaign with Vice President Harris prior to the election.
Moore won the seat that was previously held by Jackson. He was first elected to the State House in 2002 and has been the speaker of the House since 2015. He has also been a longtime ally of President-elect Trump and campaigned with him during his 2016 presidential bid.
At a 2016 Trump rally in High Point, North Carolina, Moore stated confidently, "I have no doubt he'll be our next president of the United States."
McDowell, a 30-year-old who served as a congressional aide for Sen. Ted Budd, won North Carolina's 6th District after his brother died from a fentanyl overdose.
McDowell stated during a Trump campaign rally in October that he does not want any families to suffer like his did and that it is necessary to stop the flow of fentanyl entering the country through Mexico. To achieve this, he emphasized the need to secure the southern border.
North Carolina's 13th District was flipped by former federal prosecutor Knott, who pledged to tackle crime and illegal immigration in his campaign.
At a Nov. 3 rally in Selma, North Carolina, Knott stated that he had the privilege of working under President Trump during a time when we successfully prosecuted criminals.
Redistricting helped Democrats win two competitive seats in New York, including one that was believed to favor the Republican incumbent.
During his 2022 campaign, congressional candidate Josh Riley, D-N.Y., stated that what he was observing in our democracy was alarming.
During the midterm elections, he ran for the District 19 congressional seat and lost to Republican Marcus Molinaro by less than 5,000 votes. In that year, Molinaro flipped the seat from blue to red. However, two years later, the new congressional maps in New York were thought to help Molinaro's chances for re-election, but Riley managed to flip the seat back in the Democrats' favor.
Riley said during his election night remarks, "Let's celebrate what we accomplished together tonight, and tomorrow let's get to work."
In New York's 22nd District, changes to the congressional map were predicted to impact Republican Rep. Brandon Williams' ability to retain his House seat.
""Serving in the United States Congress has been an incredible and distinct honor," Williams said after losing in the 2024 presidential race."
The district was shifted to include left-leaning cities like Auburn and Cortland. State Sen. John Mannion, D-N.Y., managed to flip the seat by running a moderate campaign and promising to protect reproductive rights while vowing to work across the aisle on immigration legislation.
Mannion stated on election night that it is necessary for individuals from both sides to oppose their own leaders.
