Reports revealed that Maryland Gov. Wes Moore made a false claim about receiving the Bronze Star medal earlier in his political career.

Despite not correcting the interviewers, Moore's staff maintains that he never claimed to have received the reward.

The New York Times, through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, uncovered that Moore had indeed claimed to have received the Bronze Star in an application for the White House fellowship in January 2006.

Moore wrote that he received the Bronze Star Medal and Combat Action Badge from the 82nd Airborne Division for his work.

Moore was awarded the Combat Action Badge in May of that year, but he did not receive it when he wrote the application. He also did not receive the Bronze Star.

As a lieutenant colonel in Afghanistan, Michael Fenzel instructed Moore to include the award on his fellowship application.

Fenzel expected that Moore would receive the Bronze Star before the fellowship started, as he believed that Moore had earned it.

However, the Bronze Star never materialized.

"I made an honest mistake by including something because my commanding officer thought it was a good idea," Moore said. "He believed I earned it and was already preparing the paperwork to process it."

Fenzel, a close personal friend of Moore, informed the New York Times that he was unaware Moore had never received the medal until this week. The general plans to restart the process of obtaining a Bronze Star for Moore.

"Moore stated on Friday to Fox 5 DC that he fully accepts responsibility, as it was his application."
