A recent statement by a top Border Patrol official revealed that they are kept awake at night by the occurrence of gotaways.
This fiscal year, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sources reveal that tens of thousands of illegal immigrants have eluded Border Patrol, with hundreds successfully entering the United States daily.
Since October, there have been 175,000 "known getaways" of illegal immigrants who have evaded Border Patrol agents but have been detected by other surveillance methods, according to sources.
Nearly 800 individuals have been leaving the border daily on average.
Despite the relatively small number of migrants crossing without being encountered, officials have frequently expressed concern about the numbers.
In March, when numbers were lower, Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens told CBS News that while the number is large, what keeps him up at night is the 140,000 known gotaways.
Over the past eight days, officials have detected over 1,200 Chinese illegal immigrants, with an average of 150 per day. The majority of these immigrants have been found in the San Diego Sector.
Last week, the San Diego Sector had over 200 encounters with migrants in two days. On Thursday, agents encountered 223 migrants, following the 262 encountered on Wednesday.
Since FY 2021, the number of Chinese nationals crossing the border has increased dramatically, with 1,970 encounters in FY 2022, 24,000 in FY 2023, and over 24,200 so far this fiscal year.
Some Republicans have expressed worry about the possibility of espionage from individuals entering the country through the border.
The Chinese Communist Party is reportedly seeking the chaos and devastation that fentanyl can bring to the U.S., as it is primarily produced using Chinese precursors by Mexican cartels and smuggled across the southern border.
In California, a Chinese national was apprehended last month for trespassing on a Marine Corps base and disregarding directives to depart.
