Conservatives celebrate Meta's "jaw-dropping" censorship announcement as a victory for free speech.
Facebook's new process will be 'similar' to that of X, as announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
On Tuesday, conservatives on social media celebrated after learning that Meta had stopped its contentious fact-checking procedures and pledged to shift its approach to a more speech-centric system.
""Meta has finally admitted to censoring speech, making it a great birthday present for free speech advocates and a huge win for those who believe in unrestricted expression," GOP Sen. Rand Paul posted on X on Tuesday, following news reported by Planet Chronicle Digital that Meta is ending its fact-checking program and lifting restrictions on speech to "restore free expression" across Facebook, Instagram, and Meta platforms, acknowledging that its current content moderation practices have gone too far."
Lyndsey Fifield, a visiting fellow at the Independent Women's Forum, stated on X that Meta will adopt a system similar to X's community notes due to the bias and abuse of third-party fact checkers, as revealed by Meta's chief global affairs officer, Joel Kaplan, in an exclusive interview with Planet Chronicle Channel's "Fox & Friends" on Tuesday morning.
"Nature is healing," Fifield said.
"If Trump hadn't won, there would have been no chance of this happening," Abigail Jackson, communications director for GOP Sen. Josh Hawley, posted on X.
"Mark Zuckerberg's video announcing the end of censorship and misinformation policies has been posted by Sagaar Enjeti on X. I highly recommend watching it as it is a significant indication of "elections have consequences.""
"Zuck's commitment to cleaning house is a positive development for internet speech, regardless of motives. It's unlikely to happen without Trump's victory."
The third-party fact-checking program at Meta was introduced after the 2016 election to manage content and misinformation on its platforms, mainly due to political pressure. However, executives admitted that the system has overstepped its bounds.
Conservatives have accused Facebook of politically motivated censorship after the platform silenced several pieces of content, including the New York Post's report on Hunter Biden's laptop, which Zuckerberg admitted was a mistake after the Biden White House pressured him to do so.
Meta, according to Kaplan, employs automated systems that make "too many mistakes" and remove content that does not violate their standards. However, certain things, such as posts related to terrorism, illegal drugs, and child sexual exploitation, will continue to be moderated by Meta.
In his video message on Tuesday, Zuckerberg stated that moderation teams will relocate from California to Texas, where he believes there will be less bias among the teams.
"Zuckerberg announced that the company will focus on reducing errors, simplifying policies, and restoring free expression on its platforms. In particular, fact-checkers will be eliminated and replaced with Community Notes similar to X, beginning in the U.S."
