GOP leaders are looking for a new strategy after the initial agreement to prevent a government shutdown on Friday was rejected by conservative opposition.

Elon Musk, President-elect Donald Trump's pick to co-chair his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), as well as hardline conservatives in both the House and Senate, were angered by the legislation.

The ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus expressed surprise at the inclusion of unrelated policy riders in the bill during last-minute negotiations.

The vote on the bill was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, but the planned vote was canceled later that day.

Johnson defended the deal on "Fox & Friends" Wednesday morning.

In January, when Republicans take control of the new Congress, we will be able to reduce the size and scope of government. However, we currently only control one-sixth of the federal government, with Democrats still in charge of the Senate and White House. Therefore, our current actions are a conservative strategy.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., also praised the CR.

He expressed satisfaction that the negotiations resulted in a bipartisan government funding agreement without cuts or poison pills, and also achieved Democratic goals such as funding for child care, workforce training, and job placement, as well as aid for the Key Bridge rebuild and additional disaster relief.
