Congressional lawmakers pay tribute to Jimmy Carter as a 'great humanitarian' after his death.
On Sunday, it was announced that Jimmy Carter had passed away.
Politicians from both sides of the political spectrum have expressed their condolences following the passing of former President Jimmy Carter on Sunday.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., stated on Sunday that he joins all Americans in saluting President Carter for his lifetime of service, which began as a naval officer, continued as a senator in the Georgia legislature, progressed as Governor of Georgia, and culminated as President of the United States.
"We, Jennifer and I, would like to express our deepest sympathies to the Carter family."
President Jimmy Carter, a humble and devoted public servant, was mourned by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., in a statement.
Schumer stated that he was inspired by the former president's unwavering commitment to justice and equality, as well as his dedication to improving human rights globally and building a better world through Habitat for Humanity, which he accomplished alongside his wife, Rosalynn.
"Carter's legacy as a leader is rooted in his faith in the American people and his conviction that kindness and humility are key to success. He demonstrated that a leader's true strength comes not from words but from actions, and not from personal gain but from serving others."
On Sunday afternoon at the age of 100, Carter passed away, as announced by his nonprofit foundation, The Carter Center.
Immediately after his death, both Republicans and Democrats expressed their sympathy to his family and commended his long-standing public service, particularly his brief tenure as president. Additionally, many people highlighted his notable contributions to the Christian nonprofit Habitat for Humanity, where he famously constructed homes for underprivileged Americans.
President Jimmy Carter was a great man, role model, and humanitarian, according to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y.
Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., stated, "President Carter's life is a testament to the boundless opportunities available in this great nation. His work in brokering the Camp David Accords and advocating with Habitat for Humanity has made the world a more peaceful place and given more Americans a place to call home."
Carter was praised by Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., the incoming leader of the Senate GOP and future Senate Majority Leader, for being a dedicated public servant and man of faith. Thune also commended Carter for his military service and time in elected office.
Carter's late wife, Rosalynn, was with him throughout his journey from peanut farming to the presidency and every step in between, as Thune stated.
Lawmakers from Carter's home state of Georgia also sent messages among the numerous memorials.
"Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga, stated that he is joining Americans in mourning the death of our 39th President, Jimmy Carter. Carter, born in a small town in Georgia, was known for his commitment to public service, leadership, humanitarian work, and Christian spirit, which positively impacted the lives of many individuals."
The Peach State Democrat, Rep. Hank Johnson, stated that President Carter brought honesty, competence, and humility back to the presidency.
President Carter had a greater impact on humanity after his presidency than any other man, according to Johnson.
On the other side of the aisle in Georgia's Congressional delegation, Rep. Austin Scott, R-Ga., stated that the U.S. lost a great Georgian on Sunday.
"President Jimmy Carter was a distinguished public servant, a proud farmer, an accomplished Navy veteran, and a graduate of the US Naval Academy," Scott said on X. "He continued to serve those in need even after leaving the White House. His legacy lives on as the namesake of USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23)."
Both of Georgia's representatives in the U.S. Senate also sounded off.
President Carter will be remembered for his commitment to democracy and human rights, his enduring faith, his philanthropic leadership, and his deep love of family. Millions will forever admire and appreciate all that he did for the United States and the global community.
D-Ga. junior Sen. Raphael Warnock stated that Carter, whom he referred to as one of his "heroes," is someone he has a personal relationship with.
"I recall the President and his wife, Rosalynn, holding my daughter, who was only two months old, during a family dinner at my church. They treated her as if she were their own granddaughter, and I was deeply touched by their kindness," Warnock stated. "They were truly special to me."
Carter, a shining example of what it means to make your faith come alive through the noble work of public service, was praised by Warnock, a reverend.
