Congress will not receive Biden's recorded interview with Special Counsel Hur from the DOJ.
Audio recordings of Hur's interview with Biden were subpoenaed by House Republicans.
The Justice Department stated on Thursday that it will not provide audio recordings of former Special Counsel Robert Hur's interview with President Biden to House Republicans, asserting that its cooperation with the congressional investigation has been exceptional.
The House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer and House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan threatened to hold Garland in contempt of Congress due to the Justice Department's inability to provide the audio recordings.
The Justice Department on Thursday reminded that it has made available a transcript of Biden's interview with the special counsel.
""Our cooperation has been extraordinary in meeting the Committees' goal of receiving information from the Department to aid your investigations," Assistant Attorney General Carlos Uriarte stated."
"He stated, "The Committees have not reciprocated in response." He added, "It appears that the more information you obtain, the less content you become, and the less justification you have for disdain, the more impulsively you move towards it.""
The Committees' threats have intensified our concern that you are attempting to fabricate a narrative of obstruction that undermines, rather than bolsters, the public's trust in our government and the legal system.
We will not waver from our responsibility to safeguard the public's interest in the upholding of law enforcement work. We hope this information is useful. Please feel free to contact us if we can offer further assistance with this or any other issue.
In February, after months of investigation, Hur released his report to the public and did not recommend criminal charges against Biden for mishandling and retaining classified documents. He also stated that he would not bring charges against Biden even if he were not in the Oval Office.
The records contained sensitive intelligence sources and methods related to national security and foreign policy, including classified documents about military and foreign policy in Afghanistan and other countries, as stated by Hur.
In his report, Hur portrayed Biden as a "compassionate, sincere elderly gentleman with a faulty memory," which has sparked considerable apprehension about his potential 2024 presidential campaign.
