Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau holds talks with U.S. President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago regarding energy cooperation.
Danielle Smith describes her meeting with Trump as "cordial and productive."
On Saturday, Danielle Smith, the Premier of Alberta, and President-elect Trump discussed the significance of their energy relationship and the numerous American jobs sustained through exports from Alberta.
"Smith wrote on X that he met President Trump at Mar-a-Lago last night and at his golf club this morning. During their conversation, Smith emphasized the significance of the U.S. - Canadian energy relationship and how hundreds of thousands of American jobs are supported by energy exports from Alberta."
She stated that she had similar discussions with "several key allies" of Trump's incoming administration, expressing her encouragement at their support for a strong energy and security relationship with Canada.
"As a representative of Albertans, I will maintain constructive dialogue and diplomacy with the incoming administration and elected federal and state officials from both parties, and will work tirelessly to advance Alberta's and Canada's interests," Smith stated. "The United States and Canada share a strong security alliance and a massive economic partnership, which are vital for the prosperity of both nations. It is crucial that we protect our sovereignty while strengthening this critical partnership for the benefit of our citizens for years to come."
Nearly a week after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation amid growing pressure from within his own Liberal Party and heightened criticisms over his handling of the economy and threats levied by Trump, Smith posted about the meeting on X.
The premier of Canada's most populous province, Ontario, has been the biggest critic of Trump's plan to annex Canada and his proposed 25% tariffs on exports from the country.
In an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, Ontario's Premier Doug Ford described President-elect Biden's targeting of Canada as "crazy" and "ridiculous."
The bilateral focus should be on "fortifying" the nearly trillion-dollar two-way trade relationship to "make the U.S. and Canada the wealthiest and most prosperous region globally."
In recent weeks, the president-elect has been mocking Canada by suggesting it could become the 51st state and sharing a manipulated image of himself standing beside a Canadian flag on top of a mountain.
The U.S. has been pushing for Denmark to sell Greenland to them.
