Undocumented immigrants in California may soon become eligible for state-supported home loans worth up to $150,000.

The California state legislature is likely to pass a bill this week that would make undocumented immigrants eligible for the "California Dream for All" loan program, which offers 20% in down payment assistance up to $150,000, according to a report for Politico.

The program's participants must be first-time homebuyers, with at least one being a first-generation homebuyer, and their income levels must fall below specific limits based on their county's standards.

The report highlights that the measure is being introduced against the backdrop of a national election where immigration has been a major issue, with the Trump campaign trying to link Vice President Kamala Harris to unpopular Biden administration border policies.

Gavin Newsom, California's governor and a top surrogate for President Biden and Vice President Harris, has not stated whether he will sign a bill into law if it passes the legislature before the August 31 deadline.

No comment was immediately provided by Newsom's office upon request from Planet Chronicle Digital.

Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that the bill is "unfair but typical Democrat policy," according to Politico.

State lawmakers have defended the legislation, stating that it is intended to provide the same benefits to undocumented residents as everyone else in the state.

Democratic Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes stated during a June hearing on the bill that it is not distributed carelessly to anyone.

The bill, authored by Democratic Assemblymember Joaquin Arambula, maintains that applicants must fulfill federal requirements, such as possessing a taxpayer identification or Social Security number, in order to obtain a loan.

The problem, as per Arambula, is that federal law prohibits undocumented immigrants from obtaining state benefits unless a state-specific law specifies their eligibility.

"Arambula stated that the intentional law they are introducing is necessary to address the complexities and questions that many in the immigrant community would face without it, as their goal was to be as inclusive as possible within their policies and ensure that all taxpayers in their state could qualify."

Leavitt responded to Planet Chronicle Digital by stating that the explanation did not alter the Trump campaign's stance on the legislation.
