A Venezuelan street gang is now a top priority for senior border officials due to an increase in gang activity in several states, including Texas and Colorado, and their involvement in various crimes nationwide.
Officials have informed Planet Chronicle that Tren de Aragua is a growing threat and they are being targeted as a priority, following warnings about the gang's presence in the U.S.
TdA has been given a "green light" to attack law enforcement in Denver, Colorado, according to a report by Planet Chronicle Digital in July. Border Patrol officials have previously warned about the gang being a threat to communities.
CBP agents were previously given intelligence bulletins by Fox revealing tattoos and identifiers for the TdA gang, which specializes in extortion, kidnapping, murder, and sex trafficking. The gang is attempting to establish itself in the U.S., where police have already linked it to organized crime. The FBI has also warned that TdA could collaborate with MS-13.
This week, four more individuals were arrested in Aurora for a shooting at an apartment complex in July, where footage of gang members carrying guns and entering apartments went viral on social media.
The Dallas Police Department informs Planet Chronicle that there has been gang activity in the north Dallas area associated with TdA.
Dallas PD officer Michael Dennis informed Fox that our department is working with other agencies to tackle crimes linked to gangs in our city. Our goal is to prevent criminal activity and ensure the safety of our community members.
The gang was linked to the shooting of two NYPD officers in June and gained more attention when it was revealed that the brother of the suspect in the killing of a Georgia student was associated with the gang.
The three-year crisis at the southern border has led to a surge in the number of Venezuelans crossing into the US, which has contributed to the rise of gangs. Although the number of encounters at the border has decreased in recent months, the aftermath of the crisis is still being felt and is likely to be a significant issue for voters in November.
The Treasury recently classified Tren de Aragua as a significant transnational criminal organization and offered financial incentives for the capture of three of its leaders.
"The Treasury Department stated that Tren de Aragua uses its international connections to transport individuals, particularly migrant women and girls, across borders for the purpose of sex trafficking and debt bondage. Additionally, members of the organization are known to murder their victims and make their deaths public as a means of intimidation."
In April, FBI Director Christopher Wray admitted that the bureau was monitoring the gang.
