Bondi silences Dem senator's criticism of another Trump nominee.
Kash Patel's record was repeatedly defended by Pam Bondi.
During her confirmation hearing on Wednesday, Pam Bondi, the nominee for U.S. Attorney General, faced opposition from a senior Democratic senator.
Kash Patel's past comments were scrutinized by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., prompting Bondi to defend President-elect Donald Trump's choice for FBI director.
He mentioned Patel's proposal to shut down FBI headquarters and create an "enemies list," along with other comments.
Blumenthal questioned whether the FBI director should be an appropriate person, given the inappropriateness of the comments made. He urged Blumenthal to disavow the comments and ask him to recant them.
"I am not familiar with those comments and have not discussed them with Mr. Patel," Bondi replied to the senator.
Before Blumenthal interrupted, she said, "What I know is Mr. Patel..."
As a career prosecutor, Mr. Patel had extensive experience in the legal field. He also worked as a public defender, representing clients in court. Additionally, he has experience within the intelligence community.
If Mr. Patel is confirmed as the head of the FBI and I am confirmed as the Attorney General of the United States, he will follow the law. However, if I am the Attorney General and I don't believe he would do anything otherwise, I would not recommend him for the position.
Blumenthal stated, "I hope you would respond by saying those comments are inappropriate and ask him to disavow or recant them when he appears before this committee, as they are detrimental to fair enforcement and the rule of law."
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., also questioned Bondi about Patel's "enemies list."
In Patel's book "Government Gangsters: The Deep State, the Truth, and the Battle for Our Democracy," a list of 60 individuals is mentioned as being part of the "deep state."
Bondi also defended Patel during Whitehouse's questioning and pledged that the DOJ would never maintain an "enemies list."
