Since October 2023, war has been ongoing in the Middle East, with Israel and Hamas finally reaching a ceasefire agreement on Wednesday that also included the release of hostages.
In his final address to the nation on Wednesday evening, Biden celebrated the cease fire and took a victory lap.
In the Oval Office, I address my fellow Americans and share important news from earlier today. After eight months of intense negotiations, my administration has reached a cease-fire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas. The details of which I had previously outlined in May of this year.
The plan, which was created and agreed upon by my team, will mostly be executed by the new administration. As such, I instructed my team to keep the incoming administration fully informed, as it is essential to work together as Americans.
The agreement was reached with the help of the incoming Trump administration, according to sources who said that a recent meeting between Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu played a crucial role in the deal.
On Wednesday, Netanyahu expressed gratitude to Trump for aiding in the release of the hostages.
The official Prime Minister of Israel X account tweeted that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with US President-elect Donald Trump and thanked him for his help in freeing hostages and ending their suffering.
"The Prime Minister pledged to release all hostages and praised the US President-elect's statement that the US would collaborate with Israel to prevent Gaza from becoming a terrorist haven."
Netanyahu thanked Biden for his help in advancing the hostages deal.
Biden rejected the notion that Trump and his team were responsible for the ceasefire deal earlier Wednesday when asked about it.
At Wednesday afternoon's White House news conference, Planet Chronicle' Jacqui Heinrich questioned Biden, asking, "Who in history will be given credit for this, Mr. President, you or Trump?"
"Is that a joke?" the president responded.
Biden replied, "Thank you," after Heinrich stated that it was not a joke, and then exited the room.
