Biden honors late former President Carter by closing government as a sign of respect.
The body of former President Jimmy Carter will be laid to rest at the US Capitol.
On Monday, President Biden signed an executive order to close all executive departments and agencies of the federal government following the death of former President Jimmy Carter on Jan. 9.
On the day of the late former president's funeral, the closures that Biden referred to as a "mark of respect" will be in effect.
Carter will be laid to rest in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., and his funeral will take place at the Washington National Cathedral, as per White House and Carter Center statements.
On Sunday, Biden issued a proclamation declaring Jan. 9 as a National Day of Mourning and directing all American flags to be flown at half-staff for the following 30 days.
"Biden invited the world to join in mourning the memory of President James Earl Carter Jr. on the designated day of assembly in their places of worship."
Carter, a Plains, Georgia peanut farm owner's son, served in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets after attending the United States Naval Academy.
He served as Georgia's 76th governor and later became the president of the United States. During his tenure, he played crucial roles in shaping various departments, including education, energy, and conservation, as well as nuclear nonproliferation.
"The President believed that the government should be as good as its people, and he had boundless faith in the people, just as he had limitless belief in America and hope for a common future. He was guided by an unwavering belief in the power of human goodness and the God-given dignity of every human being, and he worked tirelessly around the world to broker peace, eradicate disease, house the homeless, and protect human rights, freedom, and democracy."
For over 77 years, Carter's wife, Rosalynn, remained by his side.
